A couple of things in this episode caught my attention:
Carrie complained of having to do long division. She was about 8 years old. I don't recall doing long division in second grade. We worked on addition and started subtraction, were learning to read, used those fat pencils and couldn't even write in cursive. One kid threw up in class and another poor girl peed her pants. We were just little kids. Long division was something we didn't know about yet. Maybe the prairie children were light years ahead of us "modern" kids. Harriet wanted to have a plaque made recognizing her contribution to the blind school. Enough with the plaques, already! The only plaque she should have worried about was the plaque on her viscious fangs. They mentioned Lars Hanson was already dead. I can't believe he was only on the first four seasons! Was his last episode "There's No Place Like Home" in season five? |

Harriet was such a "look at me" type of person. I can't imagine Rev. Alden allowed that to even be. He should have been the one to stand up and say words to the effect of "Just because you are donating for the good of children, doesn't mean your name should be on the school. How abt instead Walnut Grove School for the Blind Mrs. Olsen?"

I don't get how that group of people even allowed her to get away with that damn plaque. Who the hell was she anyways? I mean, would Nels NOT donate items simply because his wife didn't get her plaque? I don't think so.

I might be going out on a limb by saying this, and believe me, I'm not trying to make anyone mad, but I honestly think the schoolwork was harder back then. And they had no calculators or computers to help them out, either! If you've ever read the books, you'll read how they had School Exhibitions, and boy, the things they had to do IN THEIR HEADS! Long division, even diagram sentences! And one time, Laura & one of her friends had to do a long history presentation-without notes! And about Nels, sometimes he would donate things even if Harriet didn't want him to, so who knows if he would've or not??!! |

Catlover, she would have been happy with being pacified with a piece of apple or cherry cobbler or something. Just giver her a pew with some fruit pies and a fork during the wedding, she would be too busy to oppose anything. LOL.

I learned long division in second grade, so I wasn't too surprised by that. Honestly, I thought Carrie was younger (but it's easy to forget her age, now isn't it?).
Hester-Sue was a frigid one with Joe, wasn't she? I always liked their chemistry, though. Also, these two episodes make extensive use of what I consider the Olesons' theme song. It's that little bumbling song that plays everytime Harriet or Nellie make a fool out of themselves. |
