Default Can someone please tell my mother that it's no such thing as.............

a $100,000 job in the job section of the newspaper?? I keep telling her it's not REAL and she says why wouldn;t it be real? Why would a $125,000 job be advertised in the city paper? Are we all in agreement on this???

Not completely. In New York City you would see such a thing--but then New York has a much higher standard of living that practically all other U.S. cities
In a smaller U.S. City a job paying 40-60K would have the same buying power as 100K in NYC.

I can't speak for large cities like New York or Los Angeles, I have never seen the want ads for a large city like that, so maybe someone like Brian D. or Tara can tell us, but I know that you won't find ads like that in general. Usually if you see an ad that advertises "BIG EARNINGS" etc. it is usually a gimmick or some sort of stupid job where it COSTS YOU MONEY.

Usually big firms and/or companies don't advertise big time jobs in the paper.

I guess the point I'm trying to make is that its very unlikely but not impossible. Most 6 figure jobs go thru headhunters.
.
In any event, classifieds are not the best source for most kinds of jobs. Networking and job fairs tend to work far better.

Oh No

I live in a major city, and it's not happening here. No way, Jose.

I was going to say usually jobs/careers like that are jobs you work your way up to. You work for a company or firm where you work yourself up the ladder into a better position with better pay. Just like in a law firm where an attorney starts out just as an assistant attorney and eventually work your way up to partner. There are other examples, but that is one I know best.

This is probably a scam where they ask for money after which they send you a pamphlet with lists of top 100 companies that MIGHT be hiring, but, theres no guarantees for the $10 or w/e you paid for the pamphlet.
( Ive seen this scam before, usually its top 100 companies, jobs in Alaska or on a cruise ship and in all cases, they arent promissing you anything , but some information! )

A couple of years ago, like an idiot, I responded to one of those ads about working at home and making a million a week. I called, and the woman told me that I'd have to buy a book of employers or some such stupid thing, for a small price of $350. Gee, think it was a scam?
