Benson’s old Army buddy, Eddie (played by Mark Goddard—many of you know him from “Lost In Space”), comes to town for a visit and immediately hits it off with Marcy. Too bad Marcy falls in love with him before finding out he’s married!
What seems strange to me is that Benson didn’t know. They’re supposed to be old friends and wouldn’t you think when they did finally catch up to each other, the usual topics of conversation would come up, like family? “So are you married now?” You know, that sort of thing, Anyway, Benson didn’t know it and ends up feeling responsible for getting the two together. When he has to break the news to Marcy (because Eddie is too chicken to do it himself), he has to console a very crushed and insecure woman. Eddie seems to be sorry (well, in a way), but then he thinks that Marcy is going to let him have his cake and eat it too. “If things work out between us, I’ll dump her (his wife). I promise.” Oh brother! Of course Marcy does the right thing and Eddie leaves with a fruit salad all over his head and clothes. Good for you, Marcy! You may act desperate sometimes, but at least you have your pride. Favorite quotes: Governor Gatling: “I served in Korea. Naval Intelligence.” Benson: “Well, we won the war anyway.” (After listening to an apparently pointless story by the Governor) Benson: “Well I don’t know if this is going to help Marcy. But it’s certainly been an inspiration to me.” (About Marcy) Governor Gatling: “Isn’t it wonderful? She’s in love. I can tell from her typing.” Marcy: “One guy told me he was gay so he didn’t have to see me. He even started dating guys.” So what do you suppose was in that salad? It looked like yogurt, apples, cantaloupe, some kind of honeydew and who knows what else! Not a bad episode…not a personal favorite but not bad. Kind of an odd title though. I think they should have just called it “Benson’s Old Army Buddy” or something like that but what do I know? |

This episode struck a chord in me. Like Marcy, I unwittingly briefly dated a man who turned out to be married. It just broke my heart. Unlike Marcy, I got no apologies, no explanations, or even a goodbye. I was very bitter towards men for a LONG time - not personally or individually (except one), but just men in general.
Marcy's reaction - denial first, then slowly crumbling - was much like mine. I learned about my situation at work and was so upset one of the managers had to drive me home. I loved how Marcy refused to keep seeing him - and dumped the whole gooey concoction over his head! YAY! I would have LOVED to do that to the guy who put one over on me.Very well acted - especially by Caroline McWilliams. Who would've guessed that Don West (of Lost in Space) would turn out to be such a cad!?

Monika, I can sort of relate to what you're talking about. Even though I was never emotionally involved with a married man, I've had enough of them try to hook up with me. I don't get it; I couldn't be married and still be looking. I fail to see the point in that. I always think if these guys are that unhappy to the point where they're looking elsewhere, then maybe they should just end their marriages.
But yeah, they do tend to be very slick in trying to conceal it. |

10 -- War Stories
Shorter version of theme here? Good thing to note: Kraus: Sometimes we see people the way we want to see them and not the way they really are. Gene's abridged mimed story: Bos'n Mate Horace --> a bagful of oranges. I wonder if it was supposed to be a “see, good-thing-you-lost-her” story? Marcy -- I don’t like the dialogue re: guys she's dated. Makes her a very pathetic person to me. I don't like her anyway, so this episode was dull for me; only really good thing I liked about Marcy was her giving the creep a shower! Frankly, I didn’t see what was so great about the guy. I didn’t like him even when I was supposed to like him. No big loss -- good riddance! Fave quote(s) Marcy: Miss Kraus, I do feel better. Whatever this stuff is, it works! Kraus: Ja, I know. Benson: I sure could have used some of that the other day! Kraus: Ja, I know. Gene: Isn’t it wonderful, Benson? She’s in love. I can tell from her typing! |

As far as the story, very possible...he really lost me on this one (I think he fast forwarded through too many important details)! |

Thank you for sharing your own thoughts, Lisa. That whole mess is still one of the most painful times of my life. Even though it happened over six years ago, the experience scarred me - I fear permanently. I've always been shy and insecure when it comes to relationships, anyway - and this situation sure didn't help matters any. Even now I tend to keep people at arm's length. I know it's unhealthy - but I'm always afraid something like this will happen again. Even now, this guy still haunts me. The whole mess is still very painful to recall - and I think I blocked most of it out. That's why I was able to identify so much with this particular episode.
Back to Marcy - she was such a sweet, kind and pretty lady. She was always getting involved with the wrong guys. I heard that Marcy eventually DID get married right before been written out of the program - is that true? If so, did we ever meet her husband? |

Yes, she proposed and married Dan over two episodes: "Fireside Chat" and "Marcy's Wedding."
Since he was played by Ted Danson, I'm always thinking "Sam!" |

I still love how Benson made Marcy laugh after she dumped the fruit salad all over Eddie..."Marcy, I just have one thing to say...I ain't cleaning that." The way they both cracked up was such a sweet moment - and a great ice breaker!!!

I watched this episode not too long ago, and one thing that struck me was when Benson told Marcy the truth, he kept saying, "He loved you, Marcy. He really loved you." What was the point in him saying that? To me, it would be just like pouring salt on an open wound.
