The Lions find themselves in that rare position of quarterback executioner. They’re usually the ones facing the firing squad, wearing the requisite blindfold along with protruding cigarette.

But they can expedite Donovan McNabb’s exit from Philadelphia with a stunning victory over the Eagles on Sunday.




McNabb is done in Philly if the Lions embarrass him, administering the final insult.

He’s standing alone right now, a victim of poor timing more than anything else. McNabb didn’t back down from his HBO comments in which he stated that despite improved opportunities, black quarterbacks remain scrutinized much greater than their white counterparts.

Only he can speak about his own personal experiences, so who’s to say he’s wrong? It’s one man’s perspective. McNabb showed some guts in staying true to his convictions even if it makes him come across as being overly sensitive to the natural criticism that comes from being an NFL quarterback. It doesn’t make matters easier playing in Philadelphia, a city where mercy is rarely an option as it pertains to fan temperament.

Two next-generation quarterbacks, Tennessee’s Vince Young and Washington’s Jason Campbell, didn’t agree with McNabb’s comments.

And that’s fine. Perhaps their experiences are different. It’s great that they can think for themselves and not instinctively acquiesce to the pack mentality that often dictates racial discourse in this country. But it was nonetheless disappointing that they couldn’t acknowledge a little gratitude for their predecessors.

Young suggested this old argument wasn’t his fight.

Well, if that’s true then it’s because men like McNabb helped pave the once-bumpy road the youngsters now travel.

Race is like religion. Only the naïve fully dismiss its impact. It’s always an issue, but its degree varies among circumstances.

McNabb was right in broaching the subject, but its timing proved horribly wrong. It’s a safe assumption he wasn’t expecting to have his comments juxtaposed against an unexpected 0-2 start.

“If you are looking at me as a black quarterback, then that’s part of it,” McNabb told Detroit reporters Wednesday. “If you’re looking at me as the quarterback, then I have no problem. What people fail to realize is that just because Rush Limbaugh said it doesn’t mean that a lot of people didn’t think that way.”

When Limbaugh had a bit role on ESPN’s pregame show four years ago, he intimated there was a liberal media bent toward artificially propping up black quarterbacks. He specifically stated that McNabb wasn’t as good as portrayed.
Limbaugh soon resigned from ESPN.

“There are a lot of people who feel that way, and I’ve heard people say it,” McNabb added. “If it’s not you, then you shouldn’t have a problem with it. (But) there are a lot more people in this country who look at things a lot differently than you guys do.”

What many don’t realize is that it’s the black community that scrutinizes a black quarterback as much if not more than the white community. You never hear anybody question if Peyton Manning or Tom Brady is “white enough.”

There were more than a few blacks in Philadelphia blasting McNabb as a token of management because he either couldn’t or refused to find a reconcilable resolution to the Terrell Owens turmoil following the Eagles’ Super Bowl year.

I’m sure he receives ample anonymous correspondence from the gutless who believe that spewing racial epithets gives them some warped sense of empowerment. But when you choose a professional life that keeps you in the public light, deflecting the inevitable ignorance becomes part of the job description.

If you let it bother you, it will devour you.

And Philadelphia has accurately earned its reputation of eating its own.

“This isn’t something that just happened last night or something that happened last year,” McNabb said. “It’s something over time. I mean the problem is that people think all the sudden I sat down and did the (HBO) interview after the Monday night game. This was done weeks ago. OK, it’s a big issue. Tomorrow, it won’t be.”

McNabb probably doesn’t have too many tomorrows left in Philadelphia. But if this year is indeed the end, he can comfortably exit with his soul intact.

I don't really expect the lions to win but it would be nice. I guess I'm so used to seeing McNabb and the Eagles rally when their backs are against the wall even though I think this is the worst Eagle team they've had in awhile. lol

I have been thru this time & time again with this team. I honestly would be shocked if the eagles came out this week & layed another egg. Im not promising a win over detroit, but I am promising a better effort.

As far as the other mcnabb issue my only comment is I wish he would keep his mouth shut. I know the interview was taped in August, but still why open yourself up to that stuff?
