There are so many actors and actresses who have made wonderful contributions to shows--Jean Stapleton, Doris Roberts, Michael Landon, Marion Lorne, etc.
I thought it might be nice to express why each of us likes Audrey Meadows, and/or why we appreciate her efforts on the show. To me, she and Jackie Gleason were the focal points of the show. And to me, she contributed just as much to the show as he did. I also was very fond of her in Too Close For Comfort. A smart move on TCFC's part, she, and Ted Knight, really made that show special. I have also enjoyed her interviews over the years, esp. when discussing Jackie or The Honeymooners. |

Oh goodness..Audrey..where to start! Out of all the Alice's she was the best and the brightest. She brought a lot of life to the character of Alice and managed to be everything the others were not -funny, charming, smart, beautiful, tough and loving- she put a lot of herself in Alice and her performances were amazing. She made Alice tough and sarcastic but also loving and kind..she never over did anything.
After reading her book Love, Alice I adored her even more. She was a lovely woman, talented actress and friend to Jackie when he needed one most. |

I always did like the way she spoke about Jackie Gleason when she was being interviewed. She definitely had a concern and sensitivity for the feelings of those around her. You really get a sense of her character when you read the book "Love, Alice". She is someone I wish I could have met. The best Alice that there was!!!

I don't even feel qualified to try to put Audrey and her contributions into words.. but i'll give it a shot.. I am not sure I could ever invision anyone playing off of Jackie Like Audrey did.. She said sometimes she would get a sore cheek from biting it trying not to laugh.. But she always stayed straight faced.. She always dealt with jackie being the star and Art sometimes being considered the costar.. She was content to play her part.. she was great at always playing the perfect level headed wife!
But the one thing that stands out about Audrey to me is this.. even years after the Mooners ended.. she never threw it away.. she never forgot the show that made her a household name.. or the fans that loved her for it! she embraced the show.. and she embraced us moonies that love it! and for that I love her.. and thank her for all the light she has shed into my sometimes darker times.. Audrey Thank you and may you rest in peace.. knowing your still bringing joy to all of us... |

One of the things that has always been a pet peeve of mine is actor's who get bent out of shape for being so closely associated with a show, that they don't ever want to discuss it or get offended when the show is brought up in an interview. It's a shame too. Show business is probably the hardest field to be in--one of the few where you can be phenomenal at what you do and still starve to death. So when you get a chance to be a STAR you should be grateful. And any show that really hits it big, pretty much guarantees the star financial security for life. So what's the big deal about being fondly remembered for one specific thing???? |
