Cowell turns away pregnant contestant
Friday, September 14 2007, 16:50 BST By Alex Fletcher Cowell turns away pregnant contestant Simon Cowell turns away a pregnant contestant on this week's X Factor after originally letting her through to the second round. Katie from Skegness performs Faith Hill's 'You'll Be' for the judges and initially succeeds in getting positive votes from Sharon, Louis and Simon, despite concerns from the judges over her pregnancy date. Cowell comments: "What are we going to do with you Katie? You’re five and a half months pregnant so you’d be having a baby right in the middle of the live shows. "You actually have a very good voice but your teeth are creating a real problem for you because you’ve got a bad lisp. There’s something very likable about you. I thought you sang very, very well indeed." Osbourne chimes in agreement: "You’ve got a really good voice but do you think you could cope with the pressure?” Katie replies that she can, saying: "With determination, I’ve coped with a lot of worse things, I could cope with this.” However, after Katie leaves believing she has been put through to boot camp, the judges have a change of heart. Cowell muses: “A part of me thinks we shouldn’t have just done that because she’s five and a half months pregnant. That should have been a no. It doesn’t feel right, I’m almost inclined to change my mind now.” Fellow judge Dannii Minogue agrees, saying, “I’ve got nothing against pregnant women but you can’t be singing on live TV and giving birth at the same time." So it is left to Cowell to hunt down Katie and break the news to her. He informs the contestant: "I think we’ve made a mistake Katie. I absolutely think this is the wrong decision and I know it’s horrible to be given a yes but I want to be honest with you, I don’t feel right about this. "I’m thinking about you and the kid and everything and I think this is absolutely the wrong thing to do. Sorry." |
