What do you think? Some of you might hve other ideas here, even; and there are good ones on both sides, really good ones, as it is.
Age 3, almost certainly not - I kind of think D.J. didn't go to preschool at all for a few reasons (parents more protective so wouldn't get her into preschool, but also it wasn't as popular in 1980, very few around in my area anyway, but also, imaginary friend stuck around "till she met Kimmy", etc..) Steph, no reason for her to go at age 3, but at 4? Pros: 1. She says old clothes are "the preschool me" 2. Pam was pregnant with Michelle, & playgroup kids were younger than Steph (hence older than Michelle in the 1st season ep., almost surely Steph's old playgroup from previous year(s)) 3. Her academic performance 4. Steph's anxiety about Kindergarten may not have been all because of the new school. It *might* have ben partly due to anxiety over the fact Pam was gone. 5. She's in full-day Kindergarten; it wasn't common at all back then (might have been a bit more in CA, but not a lot), but where it was an option, kids there would have normally had some preschool experience. Cons: 1. Steph's fear in Kindergarten was more than just "will the other kids like me," easy if Michelle was in preschool but then went to a bigger building w/new classmates (because the others were all int he half day program.) Steph didn't want to go into the building! 2. D.J.: "You can't be afraid to try new things." Wouldn't she have made mention of preschool? Even if all her friends were going into half day. If Steph went to preschool, school wasn't totally new. 3. Steph had always been able to tell what was bothering her before Aftershocks; so "hidden anxiety" isn't as likely, and no mention of going without Pam being there after school. 4. Danny's still overprotective, and while there are work issues with Jesse & Joey when Michelle starts, and the playgroup Danny tried to set up fell through, Steph *had* a playgroup that let her socialize, and there were no issues - another mother in the playgroup could take Steph if Pam wasn't up to it the last months of her pregnancy. 5. It's okay if Michelle's in preschool, then moved to the full-day class while all her friends are going to half-day. It's *too* coincidental if Steph was in preschool, then all of her classmates were going to half-day, too; you'd think one of the girls would have known 1-2 kids who were going to full with her. 6. Her use of the word Preschool in that first season episode. Knowing how verbal she is, she could have easily picked up the term from Danny (hearing she's a "preschooler," asking what it means, learning it's "a child before she goes to school.") Some good arguments both ways. What do you think? Did she go at 4 or not? I kind of lean toward not only becasue, watching "The First Day of Kindergarten," that was my first impression. Plus, the playgroup thing; indeed, the girls' mom was likely pretty smart, so she could have taught Stephanie easily herself. :-) |
