Default Aunt Esther's neck collar?

I caught the middle of the episode, the one with Ron Glass from Barney Miller. Aunt Esther was wearing a small neck collar. Was this explained, and did she wear it for other episodes?

I played back the episode on DVD. Actually, in this episode it wasn't explained. Herman (Ron Glass) asked her if it was an accident, Grady butted in and said, No she was born that way, LOL, Esther then went after Grady, but never answered Herman's question, and went on to the next topic. I guess we had to assume she was in an accident.

Thanks for playing it back, Garfield. I appreciate it. The reason I'm interested is because I have arthritis in my neck, and I often have to wear the same kind of collar. If LaWanda Page had a chronic neck condition, as I do, then we would have seen her wear it more. She may have had whiplash or as you say, another kind of accident.

And you call yourself the King of TV Research?! Get on the case Solomon, please, and find out why she wore the neck collar.

I noticed that Fred had a neck collar on too. I don't remember which episode, but he made a joke about it to Grady.

Fred also wore the neck brace a few times. As did Ester.

In the later episodes where Ester/Woodrow is adopting their son she is wearing a neck brace and Lamont says "Oh I forgot about your whiplash aunt Ester".

She was also sporting that neckbrace in the "wild parsleys" episode. She mentions how her neck will be better Friday 'cause the trial will be on Thursday.

I found this picture of Lewanda Page wearing a neck collar. I'm thinking that perhaps she had a chronic condition.
