I just discovered something strange.
I was fast forwarding through some episodes in season three and four and I noticed a heart with Spanish words in between episodes. I went back to read it and get a screen capture but I couldn't find it. I realized I could only see it in a flash if I went forward or reverse in at least 4x speed. When I went frame by frame it didn't show. To find it: First comes the closing credits scrolling in front of the heart on satin. Then is the heart where the script appears with "Filmed at Desilu." Then there is the CBS eye/camera lens that opens and closes. Then the Spanish heart flashes on. Then comes the modern pink hearts that they use on the DVD at the beginning of the episode. Then comes the next episode. You have to choose "Play All" from the disc menu to include the frames between episodes, rather the playing each episode individually. I was hoping to get a screen capture for Irene to translate, but it seems to be impossible. I purchased the DVD's in the boxed set, so I'm not sure if it happens on the individually released seasons as well. Can someone check this out to confirm I'm not going crazy? I would love to know what is says! |

I sure would love to see that. I only have season one though. I may just go out and buy all the seasons now. Ok, when you FF is it possible you can write down what is being shown? I know, it may be impossible, but maybe you can see a few letters/words at a time. Let me know.

Lamenentos No tenemos este Eposidio en Espanol Hablado Does that mean something like: "We are sorry we don't have this episode in Spanish"? In season six it is different. It will be more difficult to get that one; there are more words. I did see something like "alcun." I will try to get more but it is really difficult when it is just a flash and not my native language! |

Seasons 1 & 2 don't seem to have it. In season 6 the message was longer. Here's what I could see:
Lamenentos pero no tenemos algunas partes de esta episidio en Espanol hablado I wonder if these messages aired on the original broadcast after every episode. I never saw them in syndication. |

Are you asking did they show this message back in the 50's when it first aired? |

I can't see a reason why they would show that. I mean, television wasn't geared towards any audience other than an english-speaking audience.

Very interesting! That makes sense. It was a big enough deal that Desi had a starring role at that time.

Those of us who started watching ILL in syndication will never know the feeling of what it was like to watch this history-making show AS IT WAS DURING ITS FIRST RUN. I mean, by the time I started watching this show, I had seen some latin entertainers on television. Not many, but some. I can never imagine what it was like to see Desi, a very prominent figure on television who was of latin heritage during a time when television was still in its infancy.
But back to your initial question, I wonder why they have a subliminal message like that on a DVD? Why not just have it prominently in the beginning of the DVD? Or why not have it on the box cover? Interesting. |
