My fear is that one day, kids will say what is 9/11? We can't forget. As much as the images pain us, it is good to reflect.

I could never forget. I still remember watching the coverage that day. It was so surreal.

Check my avatar, and tell me I forgot.
No, Never Forget, and Never Forgive. If I had known where the Taliban's NYC Branch was that day, I would've fire-bombed it in retaliation! The so-called "Islamic Thinker's Society" better hope they don't run into me when they hold a jihadist demonstration! |

We certainly will never forget. And everyone has to remember that terrorism is an ever-present threat.

This day is, and forever will be on my mind...I honestly don't think there's been a SINGLE day in 6 years that I haven't thought about the events that took place on September 11th, 2001 (if even for a second). I haven't gotten "fully" choked up about the subject for maybe 2 years now, but there's at least 1 second each day when it does comes to mind.
It's always the smallest things that remind me of the tragedy, like looking out my backyard windows, and not seeing those buildings there. Or when I'm riding the ferry and I look across, and they're not there. Or when I see the manhattan skyline at night, and they're not rising above all the others. And then there's those planes that get lower and lower, getting ready to land at the airport, that always have me flashing back. I can remember almost everything about that day, minute by minute...I was in 7th grade, and it was during lunch that we heard the announcement that there was an "incident" in downtown manhattan. The Dean said "2 planes crashed into the World Trade Center, and they came down." A girl asked "which one?" And he said "both of them."...Those words are, to this day, some of the hardest, and saddest words I've ever heard. We knew it was serious, but we didn't know how serious it really was...And of course, like many that day, we were more confused, and scared, than anything. And of course being 12 and 13, we figured everything would be fine. Since it was around 10:30am when us kids found out, those of us that didn't go home, watched the news and listened to the radio in every class thereafter...Watching the aftermath as it happened was scary, and I'm sure everyone can relate to that. Seeing people crying, running, covered in dust, some bleeding, some burned, etc. It was too much. I remember my english teacher turned to a different news channel, when they showed certain things she felt we shouldn't see. It was during the discussion about terrorism, and the planes that went down in PA and at the Pentagon, that a lot of us really came to terms with what was happening. When I got home from school, everyone but my mom was sitting on the stoop...She was stuck in manhattan until 10 that night. The public transportation stopped running, and cars weren't allowed to drive into the city. She was afraid to walk over the bridge, so she stayed in work all day. Eventually she walked home, from 1 borrow to the next. That day has never left me, so I can't even begin to imagine how families and friends who lost someone felt, and of course, still feels. My cousin's friend, Brittany's father, was the only person I knew that left us that day. And I'm sorry everyone for writing what now seems more like a blog post, than an SO post. I just don't talk about this too much, and needed a place to vent (if that's the right word for this). All in all, I'm glad we're all here discussing what probably was the darkest day a lot of us have ever, and will ever see...My sympathy goes out to those who lost someone, and to those who are still touched by this horrible tragedy. |

MY CITY OF RUINS by Bruce Springsteen
As performed for "America: A Tribute to Heroes", september 21, 2001 This is a prayer for our fallen brothers and sisters. There is a blood red circle on the cold dark ground and the rain is falling down The church door's blown open I can hear the organ's song, but the congregation's gone My city of ruins My city of ruins Now the sweet bells of mercy drift through the evening trees, young men on the corner like scattered leaves, the boarded up windows, the empty streets While my brother's down on his knees My city of ruins My city of ruins Come on, rise up! Come on, rise up! Come on, rise up! Come on, rise up! Come on, rise up! Come on, rise up! Now's there's tears on the pillow, darlin' where we slept and you took my heart when you left Without your sweet kiss my soul is lost, my friend Tell me how do I begin again? My city's in ruins My city's in ruins Now with these hands, with these hands, with these hands, I pray lord With these hands, with these hands, I pray for the strength, Lord With these hands, with these hands, I pray for the faith, Lord We pray for your love, Lord We pray for the lost, Lord We pray for this world, Lord We pray for the strength, Lord We pray for the strength, Lord Come on Come on Come on, rise up Come on, rise up Come on, rise up Come on, rise up Come on, rise up Come on, rise up Come on, rise up Come on, rise up Come on, rise up Come on, rise up |
