Default Ricky forgetting their anniversary in Hollywood

I seen this episode this morning and it just made me laugh how Ricky went through all that trouble to lie when it would have been easier to just tell Lucy the truth and "buy" her forgiveness with maybe a fur coat or something. It wasn't the first time he forgot their anniversary.

Also, Ricky states to Lucy that the item in the newspaper was for publicity. Lucy responds rather sternly and angrily, "PUBLICITY!" However, if you rewind back to the scene when it was Ricky who told Ross Elliot to put something in the paper to make it look like the invitations to the Ricardo's Anniversary Party had gone out. Ross obliged. He had no idea what kind of deep sh*t Ricky was in and glossied up the column. Ross did tell Ricky he was going to have to make the item rather important to get it in at such a late date. How was that publicity? To me, it would have been publicity had the studio planted an item like that in the paper to get more publicity for the movie Don Juan.

What's the one where Lucy fakes their anniversary date to gain control over Ricky. I think that's the one where he brings out a generic present from the closet meant for any occasion. Ethel asks Lucy when her anniversary is. Lucy says she doen't remember because she has lied so many times.

This one is driving me crazy. I have looked through the book 3 times and can't find it by description. I remember Lucy and Ethel were sitting on the couch and Lucy exposed Ricky's trick by reading all the pre-written cards he had for any occasion.

I think that was Ethel's birthday. They're eating dinner in the Ricardo's apartment and Lucy is dropping hints to Fred that "Someone's going to get it if he doesn't remember what day it is" or something like that. Ricky thinks Lucy's hinting to him so he gets out his emergency present. That was such a great scene, I'm laughing just thinking about it.

The funniest part of the Hollywood anniversary episode for me is when Lucy finds the telegram and confronts Ricky, the only thing he can think of to get out of the situation is to say "No habla Ingles"!

You are getting two episodes confused. She gave Ricky the impression it was their anniversary when he brought home a fur coat for a number down at the club. She wore it and before Ricky could say anything she said the anniversary thing. At the end of the episode she told Ethel whenever she sees a "nice present" around she always says it's their anniversary.

The one where it was the cards for every occasion was when it was Ethel's birthday and as the poster above described, Lucy made a hint and Ricky took it to mean that it was Lucy's birthday, when in fact, it was Ethel's.

"Happy Birthday" "Merry Christmas" "I'm sorry dear, can we just be friends again."

Thanks Larry and Irene-

I had a feeling I was mixing things up, and you are both right and clarified things for me. I usually can recall a scene, but this one had me spinning my wheels.

I think the point I wanted to make was Lucy couldn't recall her anniversary date in season 1, then she made that huge deal when Ricky couldn't recall it in season 4. Ricky did remember in season 2, "The Anniversary Present," in season 3, "Sentimental Anniversary," and season 6, "Lucy Wants to Move to the Country."

I almost don't blame him for forgetting in Hollywood. He was distracted by his work and living out there wasn't their normal routine.

I would have forgiven him had he been honest with me, for the simple fact as you so pointed out, he was busy, he had things on his mind and things were certainly not normal. Seeing Ricky trying to pull the wool over her eyes would of course infuriate her as it would anyone who was being lied to.

I do remember when Ricky did remember their anniversary when he gave her the pearls. He surprised the hell outta her that time.
