(3rd Season)

(The cafeteria. Blair is reading a book. Jo walks in)
Jo: Blair, can I borrow $20?
Blair (putting down her book): What for?
Jo: Something.
Blair: Nope.
Jo: Why not?
Blair: Every time I offer you money, you say no. And now when you want money -
Jo: Blair, please.
Blair (takes out her purse and gives Jo $5): Get the other fifteen from someone else.
Jo: You're no help!
Blair: Sorry. (Gets up and leaves.)
(Jo looks around for anyone else until she realizes Blair left her purse.)
Jo: Hey Blair, you left... (stops) Never mind.
(She pulls out Blair's wallet quietly and takes out a $20 as Tootie walks down the stairs, stopping as she watches Jo. Quickly, Jo shoves it back in before anyone can catch her)
Jo: I'll get the other money another time. Just another couple hundreds more.
(She leaves. Tootie walks down all the way, mouth open at what she just saw)

(The girls' room. Tootie runs in, mouth still open. Blair and Jo are nowhere to be seen)
Natalie: What happened?
Tootie: Jo- Jo's a th-th... (can't bring herself to finish the word)
Natalie: A th-th?
Tootie: A thief.
Natalie: Our Jo? (laughs) You gotta be kidding.
Tootie: I saw her snag $20 out of Blair's wallet after Blair left the room.
Natalie: Saw her? Tootie, don't tell me you're starting that spying again.
Tootie: I wasn't! I just started going down to the cafeteria and...
Natalie: You going to tell Mrs. Garrett on Jo?
Tootie: I don't know. Jo'd kill me. But on the other hand I gotta tell her. I want to know why she did it anyway.
Natalie: Maybe she just needed $20.
Tootie: Uh-uh. She needed more than that. I heard her say she needed a couple hundreds. And I know Jo probably doesn't have $200 herself so she's gonna have to take some from somebody!
Natalie: Jumping to conclusions. You're jumping to conclusions.
Tootie: Why'd she take some money and promise to get more later, Nat?
Natalie: I don't know.
Tootie: I don't know either, but I didn't like seeing what Jo did!
(Jo walks in.)
Tootie (nervously): Hi Jo.
Natalie: Hi.
Jo: What's with all the nervous faces?
Tootie: Nervous? Who said I was nervous? I didn't. Did you, Natalie? Oh, maybe you did, Jo!
Jo: What's wrong?
Natalie: Nothing.
Jo: Well then if nothing's wrong, can I borrow $20 from you guys?
(Natalie and Tootie stare at Jo in disbelief. Tootie's mouth opens again)

Jo: Why are you guys staring at me like that?
Natalie: Staring? I'm not staring.
Tootie: Me either.
Jo: What's wrong?
Natalie: Nothing.
Tootie (changing the subject): What's new with you, Jo? What'd you do this afternoon?
Jo: Worked on my bike a little... why?
Tootie: Just wondering. Why do you need $20 anyway? Is it for you? Eastland?
Jo: What's this, twenty questions? I don't know why you guys are acting the way you are, but that doesn't mean you have to act so secretive about something!
Tootie: Us secretive? You're the one who stole $20 out of Blair's purse without telling why!
Jo: It's none of your business why! It's not Mrs. Garrett's, it's not Natalie's, it's especially not Blair's over why I stole $20!
(Mrs. Garrett walks in, hearing the end of the sentence)
Mrs. Garrett: Jo...?
Jo: Oh, hi, Mrs. G.
Mrs. Garrett: How about a little talk?
Jo: I'm kind of busy right now.
Mrs. Garrett: Jo... I'd like to talk to you now before you do anything worse than what I just heard.
(Takes Jo by the shoulder out of the room, already beginning to talk to her)
Tootie: Well, Jo is in trouuble.
Natalie: She sure is.

(The cafeteria)
Mrs. Garrett: What's this about stealing $20 from Blair?
Jo: Nothing.
Mrs. Garrett: Blair told me she thought money had been stolen out of her wallet. She just didn't know who - and I'm disappointed to hear it was you.
Jo: I was only stealing $20! She gave me $5 before she left but that wasn't enough for what I needed the money for. It's half her fault - if only she had given me the rest.
Mrs. Garrett: I wouldn't blame Blair.
Jo: I would.
Mrs. Garrett: What's the money for?
Jo: My mom wrote me a letter today saying she lost her job and can't afford our house anymore. Unless I can mail her $200 so she can keep our house, there's nothing she can do. I didn't want to ask you because I didn't know if you'd give the money to me or not and I thought if I just got $20 from Blair I could somehow get the rest and maybe even more for Mom. I didn't want to tell anyone.
Mrs. Garrett: Oh, Jo...
Jo: Should I go ask Blair for another $200 or something like that?
Mrs. Garrett: I'll slip you some dollars. I'd ask Blair too, and I'm sure she'll understand if you tell her the story.
Jo: I will.
(Gets up from her chair and walks up the stairs, a smile on her face.)
