Default My review of season 1 and 2 Canadian DVD releases

I bought season 1 at a store and season 2 I got on ebay. I didn't really want to buy them because I was waiting for Universal and already had season 1 from Universal.

Season 1 Review:

I like the box art a lot better, but they should have used ALL images from season 1 and not mixed season images. I like that there are subtitles. However, I think the video is lower quality than the Universal Release. I also noticed that the opening theme skips a note once in a while (as it sometimes does on TV re-runs) and they rush into the opening and cut off a note or so. On the Universal release the notes were all there and they didn't rush into the opening credits. I didn't like how they didn't have the airdates on the back of the box.

Season 2 Review:

Also the video quality I bet will be better on the Universal release (if it gets one) and the sound in one or 2 episodes. I know two of the episodes I think were low sound and I had to adjust the volume. The Centerfold Part 1 was low sound and so was Glenlawn Street Blues I think. Like season 1, they rushed into the theme song. They skipped one note or so in a few episodes and just opened the episode a note into the theme. I HATE WHEN THAT HAPPENS. IT SEEMS TOO MUCH LIKE A RE-RUN ON TV, OR FLAW WITH EDITING...WHICH IT WAS. I LOVED the menus! Perfect! Much better than the season 1 releases of both companies. Big pictures and easier to understand and see the icons. I LOVED the scene selection. Perfect! Cover art was good as well, but they should have gone with actual ALL season 2 images instead of mixing season images. I did not like how there was no description of the episodes on the back of the box, but I liked the airdates which weren't on the season 1 Canada release. No subtitles in this season release? WHAT THE HECK?

For season 3 they need to do exact season 3 images, have episode title, description and airdate on back of box, and use the same format they did for season 2 with episode selection and scene selection, only add in subtitles. Then that would be a perfect GAB box set. I've yet to see one.

I predict that this will happen for season 3:

There will be that picutre that is on the main website of Nell and the family with Joey on the DVD box Set, and a picture of Nell in that Black dress when she's walking down the stairs in the opening credits. For the bonus episode for season 4 preview I am SURE it is going to be Baby Of The Family. That is a really big episode from the season, and a lot of peope talk about it when Sam put Joey in Blackface.

One thing that is "very" debatable is whether I will ever resort to ordering any DVDs from Canada! In the first place, whenever possible, I like to support the ecconomy of the United States. This being the case, I am the proud owner of season one which I bought in an American store and was produced by an American company! On top of this, being a child of the eighties, I like to physically go to stores and buy things rather them order them on line. Like they say, it is hard to teach on old dog new tricks!

This being said, I would like to comment on the emblem of the poster who started this thread. It seems that he or she has a special fondness for the episode titled "Mom's Birthday". So do I! One of the reasons for this is that I have a thing for Hazel Shermet and she was in it. On top of this, I thought that Julie was a "knockout" in the boots that she wore to the Mexican restaurant! Anyone who is interested in knowing more about what I liked about that episode, can go to a thread that I responded to earlier today.

I now have a question for anyone who had gone ahead and bought the season two DVDs. I read that Hazel Shermet appeared in the episode "Nell Goes Door to Door." The part that she supposedly played was that of "Woman at Party". I vaguely remember that episode, but I do not remember her part. You see, it was not until after I bought the first set of DVDs that I learned the name of the actress or anything about her. The episode that she was in that intrigued me was "The Emergency". When I studied the credits from my new DVD, I saw the character name "Mrs. Larry Rhine". Through process of elimanation, I figured out that this was the lady I was looking for! I since did the research and found out that, even though her name was never revealed on the episode, they gave her the last name of her real-life husband who has since died. After reading the limited facts that the Internet offered, I realized that she was also Rita the saleslady from "Mom's Birthday". What I would like to know from anyone who has recently watched the second seaon is what her part was like in "Nell Goes Door to Door"! Does she have any lines or anything? Any information that any fan could give me would be "very" appreciated!

I agree wholeheartedly! However, as for the bonus episode for season 4, I completely forgot about Baby of the Family for a bonus episode choice. I kept thinking that they might choose either Nell's Birthday, Who Dunnit?, or Breakdance. In any event, I'm sure that whichever episode they choose, we will enjoy watching it, especially since it will be (in all likelyhood) uncut!

In this episode, Nell and Angie throw a party to sell Amaz-O-Vac vacuum cleaners. Hazel plays a woman at the party. At first, she is very curious about what's underneath the blanket and tries to peak until Nell sets her straight. She laughs at grandpa when he talks to the vacuum cleaner and says "I loved you in Star Wars". The climax to this scene is when the vacuum cleaner goes out of control and sucks the skirt right off of Hazel as she shrieks in humiliation. It's a great little episode!

I was thinking "Nell's Birthday" will be the bonus episode too. However, I do love the episode "Baby Of The Family". It was on TV-One when they ran their marathon promoting Season One on dvd.

I just wish we would get an announcement already. I've been watching Season 2 repeatedly. I need some new episodes of GAB!

Well, it's just a guess.

For season 2 bonus I guessed it would be Nell Goes To Jail and it was (First episode of the season and one of the most talked about).

For season 3 I guessed The Groupie (as it was the first episode of the season and Nell and Andy Gibb sang in it). I didn't think of Joey Pt I, because it was a 2 part episode. I thought they were going to do the season premiere's for Bonus episodes.

Here are my guesses for what they will use as the bonus episodes for seasons 4-6...

Season 4:

1st Place: Baby Of The Family (I just think it's gonna end up as it because it is one of the most talked about and remembered of the season.)

2nd Place: Monkey See, Monkey Do (Get a Life! Was used a lot! And the family picture was talked about a lot and how everyone hated it.)

3rd Place: TV or Not TV (Also a talked about episode that everyone was in).

Season 5:

1st Place: Joey's Train (I really think they will use this one because everyone was in it and it explains that the Chief is gone).

2nd Place: The Gun (Joey shoots Nell accidentally).

3rd Place: So Long, Jonathan (Julie Finds out she is pregnant)

Season 6: (I guess it will be once they are all settled in New York because that's what the final season was about)

1st Place: Christmas In New York (Probably one of the best episodes of the last season. I think everyone was in it...except in reruns when they take scenes out.) "Our First Christmas In New York!"

2nd Place: I Love New York (This was the first episode where Nell and everyone got settled in, but it wasn't that great.)

3rd Place: Joey's Teacher (I think almost everyone was in this episode).

Who Dunnit
Breakdance
Carl's Delicate Moment
Baby of the Family
TV or Not TV

Season 5: Joey's Train
The Gun
So Long, Jonathan
Wildchats, I have to agree with your Season 5 guesses, because I was thinking about these episodes too.

Season 6: Below Sea Level
I Love New York
Joey's Teacher
Parent's Week Part 1
I think that the release of Season 6 will be interesting, because the premiere episode, "Sam Goes to College" was originally broadcasted as a one hour episode! I also hope that for the Season 6 release that a bonus episode would be the original unaired pilot of GAB! I also hope that there will be additional bonus features on the remaining season sets, such as cast interviews, bloopers, promo spots, photo gallery, etc.

I thought about Carl's Delicate Moment as well for season 4. I don't think they will use Breakdance for the bonus. It's not talked about much as TV or Not TV and Baby Of The Family. I even forget what the episode was about. I know it had to do with Katie running out of money for her boutique, but it doesn't seem that big of an episode.

I thought about Breakdance just in case there was some wild chance that they chose a "random" episode as a bonus, rather than a more popular episode. But then again, what are the chances of that actually happening? Anyway, Breakdance was the episode where Katie needed $800 to save her boutique and Joey was breakdancing so he could help her raise the money, and all of the kids and Addy were trying to keep the issue a secret from Nell. This was one of the last episodes that we see Dolph Sweet at a point in his health before he began to really look gaunt (if that makes any sense).
