I remember when Howard Cosell called some football player a monkey. He said, "Look at that monkey run." while the game was being aired on ABC. It was such a big controversy. People were saying that Howard was racist and/or ignorant for saying such things to a black football player.

Back to Shaq, it is no surprise to me. Here is what I found:

O'Neal married Shaunie Nelson on December 26, 2002. The couple have four children, and Nelson has one child from a previous relationship. O'Neal also has a daughter from a previous relationship, making him the father of six. The family currently resides on Star Island in Miami. On September 4, 2007, ESPN.com reported that Shaq had filed for divorce. The article also claims that Shaq was seeking financial records, fueling speculation about the motivations for divorce.

Probably because it didn't sound the same coming from a white man but I saw the game and heard it and I never thought about it being a racist statement. Cossell said he used to say the same thing to his grandchildren-"come here you little monkey"-lol
