And if so, why was it cancelled? Low ratings, or maybe just Cloris Leachman didn't feel like doing a sitcom anymore?

CLORIS LEACHMAN SAID THAT AFTER THE MURDER OF BARBARA COLBY WHO PLAYED HER FRIEND AND THE DEATH OF OTHER CAST MEMBERS THAT THE SHOW LOST ITS CORE AND THE VIEWERS GOT DISTRACTED AND THE RATINGS WENT DOWN.MOTHER DEXTER AND HER HUSBAND ON THE SHOW
ALSO DIED DURING ITS RUN 2 MONTHS OF EACH OTHER
IT WAS A GOOD SHOW AND CLORIS LEACHMAN COULD'VE CARRIED THE SHOW ON HER OWN IN MY OPINION

Ok so that's what happened that caused the ratings to fall because I always wondered why the show was so succcesful in season 1 and fell off in season 2

I never knew that was the reason for it's cancellation. But I really thought Cloris was brilliant in this show - much better than she was in The Facts of Life. I would have liked to have seen it go on a little longer. But, I would have also liked to see Phyllis stay on MTM-LOL. Once her and Rhoda left, things weren't the same.

Had Barbara Colby lived, the show would have been a massive hit.

I'm afraid it was both. CBS should have renewed the show for a third season. The final episode revealed that Bess was pregnant. Must I pretend to renew the series for a third season in order to give the show a proper series finale? None of the Mary Tyler Moore Show's three spinoffs have had proper series finales.
