Default Ricky Nelson Appreciation Thread

I'd thought I'd start this new thread, and hope it will inspire others to start threads too.

We all have particular characters or actors/actresses on O&H who we REALLY LIKED. I have quite a few. But I thought I'd start with Rick. If inclined, add a post with why you like Rick. I'm not going to put my reasons first because it would be a long list!

So...if someone really likes Miss Edwards, for example, consider starting a Miss Edwards appreciation thread. If you like Harriet, an appreciation thread for her, etc.

Lightbulb Great idea Rich!

I loved Ricky Nelson. He was a teen heart throb. He was a little before my time, but my two older sisters had mad crushes on him. I recall hearing the news when he died, on New Years Eve. I felt so sad, as he was in the prime of his life. I'll post more, but I'll kick it off with a few pictures. He was so handsome. What a smile!

Janice, you're a doll! Thanks for kicking us off with your sweet post and these fantastic pictures. Actually I saw something really nice on You Tube. If you go there and type in Matt and Gunnar Nelson, one of the video clips brought up is of Matt, Gunnar and Sam Nelson singing Garden Party. Sam (Rick's youngest) looks very much like Rick. Notice the chin!

I think one of the things that endeared Rick Nelson to me was the things I learned about him from the two bios I read. I had checked them out from The Performing Arts Library at Lincoln Center. It's been really crazy at work but I'm going to go back, check them out again, and re-read them. One is by a fellow named Philip Basche and the other by a gentleman named Selwin. I'm sure there must be other sources too--anyone--if you know them--post 'em!!

P.S. Janice-- I started a MTM wrong answer game on that board. Come and play it!!

Default Joe Randolph as your neighbor

While I like quite a few of the people in the show, I always enjoy the episodes that feature Joe Randolph. He seems like the kind of neighbor that any one of us would like to have. A little bit of a needler, but not too much. The episode "David's Almost In-Laws", has a scene where Ozzie and his soon-to-be (he thinks) in-law, are done playing golf and are in the clubhouse. Joe Randolph asks him, "Ozzie didn't use the old 8 iron on the 13th hole trick, did he?". And Joe then looks as Oz and says "Oz, you didn't!" with mock shock. I always get a chuckle out of that. He's pretty funny in the episode in which his son and Ricky and Dave have the TV camera in the basement. Joe looks so naively devilish in the scene in which they are supposedly dancing with strange girls (unseen). These little things, I believe, are the elements which make O and H a special kind of sitcom, understated humor, yet always funny.

OMG Janice, those are some awesome pics. He was a doll wasn't he? I too remember hearing the news when he was killed. I was in utter shock. It was even sadder when the rumors were spread that it was somehow drug-related. How terrible was that? It went on for a long time until some tv show, can't remember which one, did an experiment and proved that the plane crash was an accident (one that could have been prevented) and that Rick Nelson was not to blame. His reputation was intact. At least I hope it was. In my mind, he was sweet as can be and he has his children to be so proud of.

I think it was the Basche bio that addressed the crash in a way that I thought was kind. He stated how the newspapers went into a feeding frenzy w/o really getting all the facts. It was the damned heater!!--not snorting and popping!

And yes Rick was an incredibly handsome man. In the bio it talked about his exploits. Since we're PG-13 I don't want to go into too much detail but suffice it to say that his sex life was a heterosexual man's dream come true--stewardesses, cheerleaders, models.....women followed him everywhere!

Hey, I would follow that man around too if he came close to me! What a loss, but what a legacy he left behind.

And thank god his sons are carrying on the legacy; they have a CD out with his songs! And that God for video, film and DVDs so we can still view the vast talents he shared with us, his fans.

Also, as an FYI, Rick appears on a Saturday Night Live show from '79. It's on the best of '79.

I haven't followed his sons around but I was a big fan of his daughter Tracy when she was on Father Dowling Mysteries. I haven't seen her in awhile though.

Tracy appeared on Entertainment Tonight abt a year ago. There was a supposed psychic who was telling Tracy info abt her father and his responses from the "other side". The lady did this without knowing she was talking to Tracy Nelson. There was a partition between them and we (the audience) were told that the psychic had no idea who was behind the wall but she would "channel" information. I don't know, I want to believe.

Anyone remember Tracy from her tiny role on the movie YOURS, MINE AND OURS with Lucille Ball? She played one of the toddlers.

Hi Irene!! Hi Sonny!

Of course! How could I forget Tracey! Where is my brain???? And of course, The Father Dowling mysteries. Yes indeed, something to ask for the next time I go to the Museum of Radio and Television, which I think they're starting to change to a new name (Paley Center) but its goes by both cause people are so used to the orig. name.

Of course I have Yours, Mine and Ours with a 5 year old Tracey. And Lucy was great in it. Teamed up with her pal Hank. Lucy still looking fab at 57 with that beautiful red hair. Man and those legs. People were always carrying on about Betty Grable's legs, but I thought Lucy's were better. She was an incredibly beautiful woman--the great legs may have come from being a chorus girl when she was young.

OOPS. but I digress. Also there's A VERY VERY YOUNG Tracey in (1 yr old) in the O&H ep The Busy Christmas. YOu can also see her at approx 35 or so in the O&H bio by A&E, which I saw at the Museum of Radio and Television.

So, to tie this all up, I guess that's one more reason to appreciate Rick--his talented kids--all 4!! And don't forget to check out Matt, Gunnar & Sam singing Garden Party on You Tube!

It was a real shame when Rick Nelson died. I can only imagine his mother's heartache. Does anyone know if Rick and David had a close relationship? David, poor guy has lost his family. I imagine that weighs on him.

Of course you are a true Lucy fan. Your comment abt her legs is something that most Lucy fans seem to agree with. She had THEE HOTTEST LEGS. I love to see those legs in that episode where she dances with Ricky to the number "Cuban Pete" in that red, tight skirt. Remarkable!!! Betty Grable had nothing on those legs.

Back to Tracy, she is a cutie patootie in that movie. I never knew for the longest time it was her until abt ten years ago.

Hey Rich

I did see that A&E bio some years before and it's pretty good. I wish they would put O&H back on TV. I remember in the 80's The Disney Channel aired a lot of the so called lost episodes that weren't syndicated with the rest of them but I didn't get that channel back then. Also I remember Tracy on a few episodes of Melrose Place. I was a big fan of that show. I think the last time I saw her on TV was on an episode of 7th Heaven.
