Thumbs down 'The Wizard of Oz' to Be Remade

Beloved screen classic The Wizard of Oz is to remade by comic book writer Todd McFarlane.

The 1939 classic is to get a gritty makeover in the new version, which will be released to coincide with the original's 70th anniversary.

McFarlane, who created violent comic book series Spawn and has written for Spider-Man in the past, says, "My pitch was 'How do we get the people who went to The Lord of The Rings to embrace Oz.' I want to create an interpretation that has the 2007 wow factor."

A History of Violence screenwriter Josh Olson has been handed the scripting duties.

Didn't Hollywood learn after the 1978 Motown financed disaster, The Wiz? I have seen The Wiz on stage (a private high school drama presentation) and it was far better than the movie.

Do a web search - Motown spent a fortune to make The Wiz and lost even more when it flopped. Diana Ross was done as a movie star.

Who's going to play Dorothy in this version - Lindsay Lohan? Paris Hilton? God help us all.

Lindsay's career is essentially over, I think.

Personally I have always loved the idea of doing a new version of The Wizard Of Oz.
Todd McFarlane has been talking about this idea for years, and a few years ago his toy divisin did some action figures based on his totally twisted take on the characters.

But...

The Sci Fi Channel is doing a "re-imaging" of the Wizard Of Oz saga this December called "Tin Man."

Looks to me like they missed the boat.

I actually liked "The Wiz" It bombed at the theatres, but I think it became popular as it was rerun over the years.

I do agree, The Wizard Of Oz is one of those classics you can't update, even if they do an up to date white version, it just won't work.

I'm one of the few people here who like "The Wiz." There are people who will strongly disagree with me on this but I liked it better than "The Wizard of Oz." I've never really gotten into the original, even when I was a kid.

That doesn't mean that "The Wizard of Oz" should be remade. Even though I think the original is overrated (and I do not say it lightly) it is one of those films that is so adored and admired by critics and movie buffs alike (except me) that it is untouchable.
