I am watching "Little Women" and am reminded of how fake Ginny Clark's hair was.
The wig was so bad, too blond, stiff-looking and heavy like a horse's tail. In later scenes she wore it up in braids or had on a huge bonnet. After she "cut it," her hair looked like it was dipped in Lucy's starch vat. That couldn't be her real hair either! ![]() For a show that really focuses on hair (long, clean, shiny, shaped, curled, braided, etc.), they really suck in the wig department! Laura's mop looked more real!

From the show that gave us the lovely blond ringlets sported by the Oleson girls - a bad wig is downright shocking!!

You are so right my lady. The first few times I seen this episode (during its first run and a few reruns later) I was wondering what was wrong with that hair of Ginny's. After seeing it more closely in syndication, I couldn't help but laugh at such a fake wig. Ok, so they don't want to cut the actress' real hair (understandable) but surely they could have found a better wig for her.
And you are right too AFTER the haircut, it looked worse! Ok, so be it, the man was making a living cutting hair and making wigs, but surely he could have left her with a better style. Geez.Did you also notice that the Ginny character also wore a bonnet. How come Mary and Laura rarely wore a bonnet? Was it something the "other girls" on the show were supposed to wear and not the leading young actresses? Why was that? Bonnets were part of the clothing of that time, but why wouldn't two country girls not wear them? |

The other two Ingalls daughters, Carrie and Grace, were often seen wearing bonnets. I can't figure out why Mary and Laura rarely were shown wearing them.

Yes, bonnets were standard parts of a woman's outfit. They didn't go to town without one. In fact, it seems most of the people of that time wore some type of hat.
Laura and Mary wore those darn nightcaps that really seemed uncomfortable and pointless, but they rarely wore a bonnet out in the blazing sun.

Caroline wore a bonnet at times. I don't get why Laura and Mary didn't. Not to say they never did, but the few times they did, it was when the show first started. I can see the girls going to school and there were the bonnets. Laura wore one a few more times than Mary, but compared to the rest of the girls in the background, it wasn't nearly as much.
Those God-awful nightcaps...what was the point? To keep the bed bugs out? More hair was showing than NOT. I can imagine the itching that cap would cause. I don't even think Mrs. Olsen wore one. Did Nellie? Or would that take away from their "natural beauty"? Or was that more of a country thing, since Mrs. Olsen didn't like country people? She did wear those extravagent hats though. |

I know Alice Garvey wore bonnets - did Grace Edwards? I think I need to watch some of those episodes again. Yes, Harriet always seemed to be wearing a hat when she was out-of-doors.

I am trying to think if Grace did. Don't know for sure. Miss Beadle wore the bonnet when she was outdoors or went to the mercantile. I wonder if she wore the thong underneath that garb?

It may have been uncomfortable with all the corsets, but I think she probably did.

Once, during a windstorm, I think I caught a glimpse of that thong!

OMG!
Another horse is missing its tail! In today's episode, "The Return of Nellie," I was reminded of how bad grownup Nellie's hair was. I am hoping it was a horrible wig, because it was pretty comical. It looked like a 19th century version of a beehive or bouffant. It was so huge, stiff and fake-looking it wouldn't have fit through a basketball hoop. I didn't know they had Aqua Net back then. Why did they do that to Alison? If it was Alison's real hair, I apologize to her, but the hairdresser really should have been ashamed.

In that Little Woman episode, I loved Miss Beadle's reaction when she saw Nellie with that dark wig on and rolled her eyes looked elsewhere. Mary and Laura caught her reaction and started laughing.
