He's not that dumb, but he's not that smart either.

That's what Sterling Heights police say about a man who caught himself on his own camera installing devices designed to capture information about ATM cards and their users.

Attaching one of the devices -- which recorded information from ATM cards used at the machine -- required technical skill.

But the man forgot to wait to turn on the hidden camera police say would have allowed him to spy on bank customers while they were at the drive-up ATM.

"He's not a stupid individual to put on this type of scam, but his blunder by keeping the camera on will help us locate him and arrest him," Lt. Michael Reese said.

Sterling Heights police said Monday that a customer found the devices, mounted in early June atop an ATM at 18 Mile and Dequindre. The devices were discovered before anyone lost money, Reese said.

Police expect to release images from the camera later this week.
