Nick at Nite Request: Art Fleming's "Jeopardy!"

Dear Mr. Ascheim,

I have a proposal for Nick at Nite: to make a deal with Sony Pictures Domestic Television Distribution for Nick at Nite to buy the exclusive basic cable U.S. rights to the 1964-1975 episodes of "Jeopardy!," with the late Art Fleming as host, which ran for 11 years on NBC. I suggest that Nick at Nite launch "Jeopardy!" with a week-long tribute to Merv Griffin, who died of prostate cancer last week at age 82. Thank you, sir.

With the exception of one episode, the original Jeopardy with Art Fleming tapes no longer exist. They were either taped over, lost or destroyed.

Only four episodes and one clip of the original "Jeopardy!" hosted by Art Fleming exist. The only four episodes that exist are the 2,000th episode which featured an appearance by Mel Brooks as the 2,000 year-old man which aired on February 21st, 1972, two 1974 episodes which aired on April 24th, 1974 and June 27th, 1974, and the 2,753rd and final episode which aired on January 3rd, 1975. The only clip that exists is a 5 minute clip of a 1967 episode. The rest of the series is either wiped, lost, or destroyed.

Only two episodes of the revival series "The All-New Jeopardy" are known to exist. The only two episodes of the revival series that exist are the premiere episode which aired on October 2nd, 1978 and the final episode which aired on March 2nd, 1979. The status of the rest of the series is unknown.

These two versions of "Jeopardy!" were the best versions of "Jeopardy!" Very fun, interesting, and entertaining to watch. Art Fleming was a great host who made the show fun, interesting, and entertaining to watch. He had a great personality and was always friendly and understanding to the contestants. He will always be Mr. Jeopardy.

GSN has aired that particular episode in the past as I recall since I'm at that message board alot.

It's possible GSN has the entire collection of The All-New Jeopardy! and has aired it before since the revival on NBC lasted only 6-8 months in 1978-1979. NBC established a anti-tape purge policy in '78 not thinking before hand the potential of cable/satellite, video would have an astounding impact for decades to come.

Would never happen. Like everybody else has said, 99% of the Art Fleming "Jeopardy!" episodes are lost forever. And besides, Nick-at-Nite air reruns of a 60s daytime game show? Would never happen.

But since we're on the subject of classic game shows being reran on major cable channels, I've been toying around lately with what I think would be a cool idea. With Drew Carey's episodes of "The Price is Right" coming in a month and half, it'll only be a matter of time before we'll no longer have regular airings of any Bob-hosted episodes. TVLand should get into contact with the people that own all of the classic TPIR runs (Freemantle, I believe) and strike some sort of deal to run vintage TPIR on a daily basis. This is the schedule I had in mind, all times central:

Monday-Friday:
9am: "The Price is Right" (half-hour daytime episodes from 1972-1975)
9:30: "The Price is Right" (syndicated run from 1972-1980, hosted by Dennis James and later by Bob)

4pm: Repeat of earlier block
4:30: Repeat of earlier block

7pm: "The Price is Right" (60-minute episodes, 1975-present)
~~~
12am: Repeat of 7pm episode

And Saturday nights could be a nice weekly marathon of the best episode sof the various versions of the show. I'd call it the "Saturday Night Price."

7pm: "The Price is Right" (1956-1965 Bill Cullen episodes)
7:30: "The Price is Right" (same)
8pm: "The Price is Right" (Dennis James-hosted episodes)
8:30: "The Price is Right" (1985-1986 Tom Kennedy syndicated episodes)
9pm: "The Price is Right" (2 half-hours or 1 60-minute Bob episode)
10pm: "The Price is Right" (same)

I think it'd be an awesome idea, but...well...it's TVLand, so it'll never happen. And besides, I don't think Bob has warmed up to the idea of rerunning fur-coat episodes yet.

I'm not buying that every episode were destoryed.Like we found out with THE HOLLYWOOD SQUARES,those tapes were lying somewhere in a vault collecting dust,and I'm willing to bet the same for this show.Merv,being the type of man he were probably got them stash somewhere.Even if they found them,do you seriously think that NICK AT NITE would actually show them?!?As much as they are in love with FREASH PRINCE OF BEL AIR?!?Or they will show anything of classic value?!?

There are additional episodes of the original "Jeopardy" that exist in the UCLA Television archive, bringing the total known to exist up to some 20. However, these UCLA episodes can only be seen at UCLA.

I can confirm the existence of the second episode of the 78 revival existing as well.
