Question On Business Calls, do you write down the 'Reference' or 'Confirmation' Number?

When you're on a business call, and the person assisting you gives you a "Reference Number" or a "Confirmation Number" for the call, do you write it down?

I only do if I think or know I'll need it in the future. A couple of weeks ago, I was on the phone with customer service person from Blue Cross/Blue Shield. I was disputing a bill I had received, and I actually made my case. At the end of the call, the rep asked me if I wanted a reference number for the call. I joked and told her that usually I just pretend to write it down, but in this case, I'm really going to write it, lol.

If a rep asks me if I want a Ref # and I know I won't need it, I'll say no.

You know I always do...and the ONE TIME I DIDN'T, I should have. It came back to haunt me and bite me on the a$$. It was for a car insurance payment I did over the phone. Never again. I ALWAYS WRITE THEM DOWN, because you never know.

I have a black calendar date book that I write down my appts. I also write down on the dates I pay bills and the confirmation number. I like to be anal like that.

I've gone as far as pretending to have to find a pencil, then I do that 'air writing' thing.

I used to do that too. I'd make noise like I was grabbing a paper and pen.

I always write them down and then throw them out when I don't need them anymore.

Yes, I do write them down. I've noticed that the representatives usually read them off in warp speed. I always have to ask them to repeat them. I only do the air writing thing for bills.

I remember when I was single and in financial dire straits, when I would get collection calls, I would pretend I was not me on the phone, and they would want to leave a number, I did the air thingy then... "Ok, go ahead what is the number?"

I'm always afraid that they're going to ask me to repeat it back.
