I don't think anger management classes were around in the 1970s, or if they were, weren't as well-known as they are today.
James, to me, may have been a yeller, but he was only angry at the system and the low wages he brought in doing menial jobs. He never hit his family - in fact, he adored his wife and kids and only wanted the best for them. James - and his portrayer, John Amos - ROCKS.

James used to scare me as a kid when he got angry. Therefore, John Amos did his job. LOL.
