Although the main theme in this episosde is that Benson falls in love with Senator Francine Wade and ends up heartbroken at the end, it actually has quite a few funny moments in it.
I think my favorite scene in this episode may be the whole "cookie scene" when everyone eats the cookies Kraus made for the Governor. Then when he comes in looking for them she says angrily, "You want cookies? Call Betty Crocker!" I also loved the scene when Benson comes into the kitchen late at night and Kraus has rollers in her hair and has this look of panic, anticipating Benson's insults for her appearance. Instead, being in a great mood after his date, he comes over and kisses her--on the NECK! He also gives her a flower that she snaps after he leaves. Classic! (By the way, does anyone know the song he is whistling here? I'm trying to figure it out. Also I'd like to know the song that's playing on the turntable later when Benson and Francine are dancing together.) Marcy has a couple of good lines in this one. Benson: "She didn't say no. She didn't say yes either." Marcy: "That ALONE should have told you she's a politician." Gene (to Benson): "You have the look of a man about to propose. I've seen it before." Marcy: "I haven't." Wouldn't say it's one of my favorites from Season 1, but overall a pretty entertaining episode.

4 -- Benson in Love.
What the heck is Benson getting during the intro? A newspaper? The delivery guy must have aimed high over the wall! Kraus snapping the flower was an absolutely great touch. Don’t see why Marcy is so down when left out of the man-to-man chat, she’ll just eavesdrop anyway. My fave line(s): Benson: You think I’m thinking about proposing? Governor: You have the look to me of a man who’s getting ready to propose. I’ve seen it before. Marcy: I haven’t. This was a so-so episode for me, but I liked (as it were) that things didn’t turn out solved and happy at the end, as is usual for a sitcom; made it more realistic. I like her far better than the lady Benson ended up getting engaged years later. |

And ironically, the actress who played Francine in this episode (Beverly Todd) also appeared in "Benson's Groupie" (Season 2?). Quite the opposite--to go from Benson being in love with her in this one to Benson despising her in that one.

I think my favorite scene in this episode may be the whole "cookie scene" when everyone eats the cookies Kraus made for the Governor. *** I like how he comes in -- hands all ready to grab tasty cookies -- and she throws the empty jar into them, poor guy. You know, what with her practically kicking him out of the "closed" kitchen and then no cookies, Kraus is fortunate indeed that he is a sweet person! *** (By the way, does anyone know the song he is whistling here? I'm trying to figure it out. Also I'd like to know the song that's playing on the turntable later when Benson and Francine are dancing together.) *** I now have that (whistled) song in my head, but no idea what it is. Must admit I wasn't really listening to the turntable one. I am of no help! |

Love those kitchen scenes though. Lots and lots of milk. I still say they should have used "Benson" for some health campaign back then. "Drink milk, kids...Benson does!"

Shhh, BensonFan, but actually [looks around]... it's a milk conspiracy.
Hmm, with the price of milk the way it is now (at least where I live), their midnight drinking alone would probably break the budget! Was milk cheaper then, I wonder? |

This was never one of my favorite episodes but thanks to the DVD I've now seen the excellent closing scene where Benson is in the kitchen trying to fix Katie's roller-skate. I have to say that the part where Katie said...Benson I wish you weren't so old...was right on the mark and so down right funny I couldn't believe it. The innocent way she seems to have had no idea what she had said and Benson's reponse was so real.

This wasn't a favorite of mine. I mean - a SENATOR living in an APARTMENT? With NO security around? I don't think so. Anyway, Benson was way too good for her.
What made it worthwhile was Marcy's line about men proposing (already mentioned above) and the tender tag scene between Benson and Katie.

I got the opposite reaction, that they'd dated for a while before the proposal.
The one where I got the "wow, he moves fast!" reaction was when Gene told the lady (can't recall here name, but the niece of the ex-gov) he loved her. Once he fell, he wasted no time! I also sort of get the impression he proposed to Olivia quite soon after her husband died. |
