Default "Mild" Earthquake 40 Miles Northwest Of Los Angeles

Early this morning, at 12:58 AM, there was a mild 4.6 earthquake located 4 miles north-northwest of Chatsworth, Calif., in the San Fernando Valley area of Los Angeles. The depth of the quake was 3.4 miles, a shallow quake, and was felt over a large area.

Three aftershocks were recorded... a 1.8 magnitude at 1:14 AM, a 1.6 at 1:49 AM and a 1.8 mag at 2:42 AM.

I was awake during the main shock. It was brief, about 10 seconds, but easily felt. The aftershocks were too small to be felt.

We out here in California really can't complain about this morning's event... I haven't felt a quake for about 4-5 years.

I am surprised you didn't feel it- it was felt as far south as Long Beach and as far east as Alhambra.
But don't feel bad for missing it!

I felt NOTHING! Then again, I was asleep. Must have been nothing if it didn't wake me. That's the thing abt these mild earthquakes, they get coverage like it is some rocking and rolling and buildings tumbling.

Fortunately, it looks like the aftershocks are dying out. And if we're lucky, there won't be another seismic event for quite a while.

That's funny. I was up at that time and didn't feel anything either, and I live in the valley.

Jrnygrl you are right, we are overdue and that is what scares me. I can deal with these small tremblors and mini earthquakes, but it is those large ones like the Northridge quake that lurks in the back of my mind.

No, that was in 1992. The 6.7 magnitude Northridge was in 1994. And the 7.0 magnitude Hector Mine quake (in the desert) was 7.0.

There are always aftershocks after a quake of about magnitude 4 and stronger.
