This may seem like kind of a strange question, but my son's been watching "Rescue
from Gilligan's Island" over and over again and something struck me. In the scene in which Gilligan and the Skipper "save" Maryann from her wedding to Herbert (who, by the way, has nothing to do with Harold Higgenbotham!! People sometimes think they are the same person. "The Postman Cometh" is irreconcilable, it seems with the "Rescue" movie), the Skipper drives the tractor while Gilligan is to pull Maryann onto it. Since this is such an important action, which must also be done at break-neck speed, why wouldn't the Skipper be the one assigned to pull Maryann away since he is so much stronger than Gilligan. Gilligan, as we have seen in the series, and as is implied in it, can drive--so he could drive the tractor. A picky point, but, I've been thinking about it. Thanks!!! |

Yeah!I know what you mean but,I'm glad it was the skipper who drove the tractor because if it was Gilligan with his bad luck,he could drive over Mary Ann.I can imagine Mary Ann running away from the tractor and the skipper who yells at Gilligan to stop it...
Gilligan rescuing Mary Ann was more romantic.I thought for a moment, that Gilligan would ask Mary Ann to marry him instead of Hebert but,he didn't That would been wonderful if he suprised the others at the reunion by saying:Everyone,Mary Ann & I got married!!!Sorry, the Mrs.Howell in me gets carry away sometimes ![]() By the way,it was Horace Higgenbotham

Lets face it, in real life, the 3 single men would have been fighting over her, while Mr Howell would have used his money and power to attract Ginger ( after Lovey "had a mysterious and tragic accident"! ).

cute scene. ... i guess they didn't add any of that kind of stuff, because then millions of fans would be demanding to know what would become of them. |

Yeah!It would been so romantic if he proposed at this moment...He pulled Mary Ann away while sitting next to her in the chariot I was waiting for him to say...I always loved you, don't marry that guy marry me!!!It would been a much better scene instead of watching them throwing watermelons at lunatic farmers

To answer my question--I wanted to see what all of you thought first--I asked two other people about this and they both said they thought Gilligan pulled Maryann because he might not have known how to drive a tractor. Possibly. I have to agree with Celine, though. Gilligan's holding his hand out to Maryann could be seen as a romantic gesture.
I think a wedding would usually be disrupted only if a similar offer was being given. We do not hear what they are talking about on the tractor--there might have been a proposal and the mere gesture of Gilligan holding his hand out could be taken to imply this. Gilligan certainly seems more emphatic in this scene, more determined, more energetic, more caring about helping a fellow castaway, more like the old Gilligan (rather than like the somewhat insipid character he is made to look like in some of the other scenes in the movie) and he is very vengeful and energetic in the watermelon-throwing scene. So, perhaps we need not write off a proposal from him in that scene. The only problem with this is the two movies that follow--I haven't seen them in ages but Gilligan and Maryann are certainly not married in them. But then, again, do the movies always follow consistently with what has gone before? Please answer my answer if you have some thoughts on it!!! |

I was actually saying it can look VERY MUCH as if there was a proposal from Gilligan
and my comment that there are inconsistencies at times would mean that even if the next two movies had a single Gilligan and Maryann, there may still have been a proposal in "Rescue" but it would be an example of these inconsistencies. Still, we don't know whether it is an inconsistency or its not being developed in the following movies is proof that there was no proposal in "Rescue." I haven't seen the other two movies since they first aired on TV, so it's hard for me to comment on them. Aside from them, though, the tractor scene looks very pro-MAG to me! |
