MySpace users to submit short TV pilots contest

It didn't work on television, but Fox is hoping that MySpace is the key for a new contest that's in the mold of "On The Lot."

Net is teaming with its new media sib as well as the Producers Guild for The Storyteller Challenge, a contest that will allow users to submit a short 5-7 minute television pilot and will hand out two prizes for $25,000 each as well as an "opportunity" at a development deal.

Users will be allowed to submit videos beginning in September. MySpace will gather videos on a section of the site Winners will be announced in January.

Members of the guild will judge the competish along with film-schol students and Fox execs. Consumers will have a chance to make comments and vote to give videos better placement on the site.

"Producing will always be a difficult and competitive job, but I’m proud that our Storyteller Challenge will give unique new voices the chance to find their audience," said PGA chief Marshall Herskovitz. "You never know where the next great storyteller will come from."

Fox summer skein "On the Lot," which aimed to find a theatrical director through an on-air contest, with judges commenting on work, flopped in the ratings. But News Corp. hopes the contest will be better suited to online medium than an hourlong primetime show.
