Bertha Edwards?

Tonight TVLand had the episode where Aunt Bee leaves Andy & Opie so she can take care of a relative in Mount Pilot. I only saw the last few minutes of the episode and did not catch the title, but it is probably from the first season.

Anyway, Aunt Bee calls Mrs. Edwards "Bertha". Isn't her name Clara in other episodes (& does the same actress play both Mrs. Edwards & Mrs. Johnson?). If they did change her name, is this the only episode where her name is Bertha?

Another episode I remember from years ago, but now I see the inconsistencies that happen from episode to episode & year to year.

yes; I think that was the only episode where she was called "Bertha". TV shows do that a lot, in the begining-they change little things or add little things, etc.

I liked both 'Clara' and Hope Summers, the actress who played her.

Hope Summers appeared in two episodes of the 1st season: "Andy and Opie, Housekeepers" and "Andy Forecloses". She was Bertha Edwards in "Housekeepers" and I assume she was Bertha in "Forecloses" as well.

In the 2nd season, Summers became Clara Johnson and remained so until the 5th season episode "The Pageant" when she became Clara Edwards. In the 5th season, she also played a character named Miss Bedloe in the episode "Banjo-Playing Deputy".

Hope Summers as Clara Edwards went on to make occasional appearances in TAGS sequel Mayberry RFD.

Another interesting character name change: Cheerio Meredith appeared several times in the 1st season as Emma Brand but became Emma Watson in the 2nd season episode "The Manicurist".

In sum, the actress Hope Summers played Bertha Edwards, Clara Johnson, Clara Edwards, and Miss Bedloe.
