Season 1 was a C-, very dull season but a couple of good ones like the Piano ep and the one when Lamont got his own place

Season 2 was a B-, the show was slowly picking up steam, esther and rollo was introduced and the eps were getting more fun to watch

Season 3 was a B because of Redd Foxx missing 9 of the eps that season, but out of the ones he was not seen in, 3 of them was still watchable

Season 4 was a B-, redd foxx returned, some of the eps were duds, but still some great highlights in this season like Surprise party

Season 5 was a C+, show was losing steam but I enjoyed the eps the stung, the ep with esther in the beauty contest and the stung.

Season 6 was a D+, too many stupid eps to count, not enough Rollo, woddy and esther adopting a teenager. The two eps that stopped this season from being a F was the stakeout and the ep-"School Daze"

I will give season 1 a C+ because it focused on the two principle characters and the show was still searching for what would work and what wouldn't. If you noticed, the first season, the kitchen table was in the living room and the couch was against the wall near the front door. I guess tey realize they had to change it around.

Season 2 gets a B+ because the show picked up, got funnier, better episodes, and more characters.

Season 3 gets a B- because it carried over from season 2, But Redd being absent doesn't help either.

Season 4 gets a C-. redd does return, but the show was not the same from there.

Season 5 gets an E. These episodes were bad.You could tell they had new writers. Plus, Rodney and Mrs. Hopkins were intoduced. I didn't like any of them.

Season 6 gets a D+. I actually liked this season better than 5. If they would have had a better finale, maybe this season would get a C.

Season 1: C+
Not a great season but it wasn't a bad one either. The chemistry between Fred and Lamont was great from the start. The only thing that kept this season from being great was the lack of supporting characters or rather the lack of funny supporting characters. Aunt Ethel was terrible. The classic episodes from this season are "Here Comes the Bride, There Goes the Bride", "A Matter of Life and Breath" and "Coffins for Sale".

Season 2: A
This is when the show really started to become great mainly because of the additions of Rollo, Julio and Aunt Esther. The interactions that Fred had with those 3 characters were almost always hilarious. My second favorite season. The classic episodes from this season are "Have Gun Will Sell", "The Puerto Ricans Are Coming", "A Guest in the Yard", "The Big Party", "Lamont Goes African", "Watts Side Story", "Pops 'n' Pals", "Home Sweet Home for the Aged" and arguably one of the best episodes of the entire series "Rated X".

Season 3: B+
Another great season. The only problem though is Fred didn't appear in the last 6 episodes. Grady did an ok job trying to take his place but the name of the show is Sanford and Son and without Redd, the show just wasn't the same. The classic episodes from this season are "Lamont as Othello", "Presenting the Three Degrees", "Superflyer", "The Engagement", "Mama's Baby, Papa's Maybe", "Fred Sanford, Legal Eagle", "Fred's Cheating Heart" and "Lamont Goes Karate".

Season 4: A+
IMO, the best season of the show. Fred was only missing in 3 episodes and 2 of them were pretty good. "The Surprise Party" and "There'll be Some Changes Made" are two of my all-time favorite episodes of S&S. Other classic episode from this season are "Grady and His Lady", "Home Sweet Home", "Sanford and Niece", "Julio and Sister and Nephew", "Fred's Treasure Garden", "Once a Thief", "Strange Bedfellows", "The Masquerade Party", "My Brother-in- Laws Keeper" and "The Stung".

Season 5: B-
This is when the show started to go downhill. It was still watchable but there were a few episodes from this season that were awful like "Sergeant Gork" and "Camping Trip". The classic episodes from this season are "Brother, Can You Spare an Act?", "My Fair Esther", "Ebenezer Sanford", "The Oddfather", "Fred Sanford Has a Baby" and "The TV Addict".

Season 6: D-
The worst season of the series. It's like the writers and the actors didn't give a damn anymore and were just doing it for the money. Demond Wilson looked like he was stoned for most of the season, especially when he wore those sunglasses. The only classic episode from this season was "Committe Man". There were a few watchable episodes but The Hawaiian Connection episodes and "Fred Meets Redd" were terrible. And that storyline about Aunt Esther and Woody adopting a teenage boy who looked like he was in his 20's was ridiculous.

Brother Can you spare a Act was the best ep of Season 5. I'm about to watch it again on DVD-lol

I think the Hawaiian Connection episodes were the worst, but Sergeant Gork was definitely my least favorite single episode.

Season 1 – A+. I give this season as A+ because it set the stage for the relationship between Fred & Lamont and it developed both their characters. It showed Lamont’s unwavering love, but impatience and belligerence with his fractious father. The strife between Fred and his relatives, as seen in Here Comes the Bride, There Goes the Bride is introduced and is carried through out the entire series. The first season also established some of Fred’s funniest moments that were used the entire series, such as Fred rummaging through the drawer of glasses looking for a particular pair and the gesture Fred made with his hand when he suspected someone as being gay. All the eps in Season one were Very Good to Excellent even without the great supporting characters of Aunt Esther, Bubba, Grady, Rollo and Julio, whom we later knew and loved. Fred and Lamont carried the Season themselves. Crossed Swords; Happy Birthday, Pop; Here Comes the Bride, There Goes the Bride; the piano Movers, and one of my personal favorites, The Copper Caper were all A+ #1 episodes.

Season 2 – A+. More of Fred and Lamont, of course, but now we are introduced to the great cast of supporting characters, Bubba, Rollo, Julio and Aunt Esther. Card Sharps and Rated X are classic.

Season 3 – A. Still more great eps and a great season. I think the eps with Grady during Freds’s contract dispute were all good, however, the show is at it’s finest with Fred. Mama’s Baby, Papa’s Maybe and Fred Sanford, Legal Eagle are tough to beat.

Season 4 – B+. Still a lot of good episodes. The Masquerade Party and my personal favorite for the season, Home Sweet Home were good episodes. Even the rest of the Grady eps were good. I though Tower Power and the Golden Boy were a little weak.

Season 5 – B-. A few more eps that I thought were weak – Can You Chop This and the Greatest Show in Watts were not great, although I did enjoy seeing LaWanda Page doing her act. I didn’t like that they had an elephant in that episode. I am for animal rights, and the use of animals in circuses is one of the cruelest inhumanities and exploitations of animals to this day. The all time worst ep of the season and series was the Oddfather. That episode deserves an F-. Awful.

Season 6- C. The Hawaii 5-0 trilogy was tough to get through. One episode would have been bad enough, but three? Aack. The Stakeout was pretty bad too, with Fred falling for that obviously disguised man. The season did have it’s redeeming episodes though. I thought Chinese Torture and Fred Sings the Blues were among the best eps of the season. And the exchanges between Fritzi Burr and Fred in Fred Sanford Has a Baby were amongst their finest. School Daze wasn’t a great episode, but as it turned out, ended up being the swan song of the entire series. It did end the series on a sweet note though, with Lamont and Fred saying that they loved each other. It sort of summed everything up nicely.

I don’t give any of the seasons a really poor grade. I remember watching the series when it originally aired. My late great father and I ‘howled’ with laughter over the antics of Fred and the wonderful nuances throughout the show. When the show originally aired, it was very much on the pulse of what was going on politically in the country. Jokes about Nixon, Watergate, and women’s liberation were cleverly woven into the fabric of the show. The many references to Deep Throat, both as it related to Watergate and to the porn movie were very relevant to the times. Sanford and Son is one of the finest shows in tv history and was very cutting edge, but I don’t think anyone knew it at the time.
