Default The crazy things you believed as a child...

When I was around 5 or 6 years old, I used to think that if I didn't eat all the chinese food that was served to me, I would be followed and chased by samurai-type men. I guess I was told something by my brother abt "you better eat all your dinner..." because for the life of me, I was so scared, I would eat EVERYTHING on my plate. I imagined this sho-gun type man with a long black ponytail and carrying a sword appearing in my bedroom window one time. It freaked me out

Also, I used to believe in the tooth-fairy til I was abt 8 years old. I used to put my "old" teeth (baby teeth) under my pillow when I wanted some money for the next day to buy something from the ice-cream man. I would wonder why the tooth-fairy didn't leave me any money.

In 1971, we had this huge earthquake. I was six years old. It was my first time experiencing an earthquake. It happened in the middle of the night. I woke up and felt the bed and house shaking. I was crying and so scared because I thought it was one of those giant monsters from those japanese movies that terrorizes the cities of Japan. I imagined this huge bigfoot type monster the size of King Kong stomping all over our neighborhood. I couldn't stop crying. My brother had an extra bed in his room and I stayed there the whole night because I kept imagining that monster. It took some time for me to realize what an earthquake was and that those huge monsters don't exist.

I also used to think when a house was sold, whoever would buy that house, would exchange their old house with the one they bought. In other words, the two owners would simply exchange houses. I was 7 years old then.

I always took song lyrics literally as a kid. The Jeffersons was still on the air (in first-run!) when I was little and I remember dancing to the theme song in the living room. I was so confused about the lyric "we finally got a piece of the pie". I thought they meant real pie. I thought "what's so special about that? Have a cherry pie, or a blueberry pie." I didn't understand it was all a figure of speech until several years later.

Hall & Oates' "Maneater" was a popular song around that time, and I could not understand why everyone liked it so much. I said, "That's a horrible song. She wants to eat him!" I thought it was a song about a cannibal. When I saw H&O perform live in 2002, I had to laugh when they did "Maneater" because it took me back to when I was a little kid.

My grandmother gave me a beautiful children's dictionary with gorgeous photographs. I believed I could pop myself into the book so I could be in those beautiful pictures.

That's all I can remember now, but I'm sure I'll think of more later.

That doesn't happen? lol. I used to think that we lived forever. I remember the moment I found that that we all die eventually. My uncle told me when I was about five or six. I used to think that there were no bills. Our parents had no worries. The house, cars, lights, phone, food, clothes...why that just appeared, lol.

I also foolishly thought that life was fair, but it really isn't, not from my perspective anyway.

As a kid my dad had me convinced of a sock monster who would live in the dryer and randomly steal socks. I have never been able to prove his existence but I still to this day often find that random socks go missing...

the Sock Monster?!?!?

When I was little I used to think my great grandmothers house was haunted. The house was real old and none of the kids were allowed to go upstairs. You could hear noises coming from up there and everyone said it was spooks. I believed that for along time and would never spend the night at her house. Eventually my mom told me it was only mice up there.
