Default Who Needs the Kwik-E-Mart? 7-Eleven Does

http://www.abcnews.go.com/Entertainm...ory?id=3337228

Barbara Burke leaves the 7-11 "Kwik-E-Mart" in Dallas, Sunday, July 1, 2007. Over the weekend, 7-Eleven Inc. turned a dozen stores into Kwik-E-Marts, the fictional convenience stores of "The Simpsons" fame, in the latest example of marketers making life imitate art.

Over the weekend, 7-Eleven Inc. turned a dozen stores into Kwik-E-Marts, the fictional convenience stores of "The Simpsons" fame, in the latest example of marketers making life imitate art.

Those stores and most of the 6,000-plus other 7-Elevens in North America will sell items that until now existed only on television: Buzz Cola, KrustyO's cereal and Squishees, the slushy drink knockoff of Slurpees.

It's all part of a campaign to hype the July 27 opening of "The Simpsons Movie," the big-screen debut for the long-running television cartoon, which loves to lampoon 7-Eleven as a store that sells all kinds of unhealthy snacks and is run by a man with a thick Indian accent.

For 20th Century Fox Film Corp. and Homer's creators at Gracie Films, the stunt is a cheap way to call attention to their movie, since 7-Eleven is bearing all the costs, which executives of the retail chain put at somewhere in the single millions.

At 7-Eleven, they're hoping it shows the ubiquitous chain has a trait seen in few corporations the ability to laugh at themselves.

"We thought if you really want to do something different, the idea of actually changing stores into Kwik-E-Marts was over the top but a natural," said Bobbi Merkel, an executive for of 7-Eleven's advertising agency, FreshWorks, a unit of Omnicom Group Inc. "It shows they get the joke."

The monthlong promotion has been rumored a long time it's hard to keep a secret known by so many suppliers and franchisees but 7-Eleven managed to keep the locations of the stores quiet until early Sunday morning. That's when the exteriors of 11 U.S. stores and one in Canada were flocked in industrial foam and given new signs to replicate the animated look of Kwik-E-Marts.

The U.S. locations where a 7-Eleven store was transformed into a Kwik-E-Mart are New York City; Chicago; Dallas; Denver; Burbank, Calif.; Los Angeles; Henderson, Nev.; Orlando, Fla.; Mountain View, Calif.; Seattle; and Bladensburg, Md.

The idea grew out of conversations between Fox and 7-Eleven's advertising agency.

Unbelievably they opened the only Canadian location and only one of 12 in my small town of Coquitlam (pop 122,000)

I went yesterday actually by accident as I happened to have a slurpee craving. I saw that the 7-11 had become a Kwik-E-Mart overnight.

It was pretty neat to see, all the signage had changed and inside all the clerks were dressed in the traditional green Kwik-e-mart clothing.

I got the last box of Krusty-O's for my sister but I am sure they will be restocking.

Default Oh Canada, D'oh Homer

Last Updated: Wednesday, July 4, 2007 | 2:04 PM ET
CBC News
For the past decade, Squishees, Buzz Cola and Krusty-Os cereal were the tasty fare of Bart and Lisa, purchased at the Kwik-E-Mart on The Simpsons.

But this weekend, the fictional store and its products became a reality at 7-Eleven stores across North America.

Employees at a 7-Eleven in Coquitlam, B.C., open their store decked out as the Kwik-E-Mart, the fictional convenience store made famous by The Simpsons TV show.
(CBC) One store in Canada and 11 in the U.S. were covered in industrial foam to make them look animated and stocked with Kwik-E-Mart products to promote The Simpsons Movie, premiering later this month.

The promotion had been rumoured for a while, but the U.S. locations were kept secret until this past weekend, and the Canadian location, in Coquitlam, B.C., was only revealed Tuesday.

'Springfield for a month'

"We've become Springfield for a month," Coquitlam 7-Eleven store manager Brian Watt told CBC News. "It's a great thing."

For one month only, Apu Nahasapeemapetilon's fictional store has been replicated almost perfectly, with life-sized models of Apu, Homer and Chief Wiggums overseeing doughnut-eating competitions and the sale of Simpsons products.

While there are lots of doughnuts and Marge straws, fans won't find any Duff beer. Promoters decided it wasn't appropriate to sell the drink to promote the PG-13 rated movie.

Even without Duffman, fans at the Coquitlam grand opening on Tuesday enjoyed seeing the small-screen store become a reality.

People chugged squishees, ate pink-frosted donuts and shared their favourite lines from the store, including, of course, Apu's famous, "Thank you, come again."

I'd get a box of Krusty-O's, but I'm afraid I'd find a razor blade in there like Bart did.

Nearest one to me would be.....Chicago.

No way I'm driving to freakin Chicago to go to Kwik-E-Mart, much as I love the concept. That said, my friend Adam JUST moved to LA, and happened to stop at the one over there. Wonderful time has had, so I'm told.

Apparently the other 7-11's will be selling the Simpsons merchandise as well (Squishees, pink donuts, Krusty O's, etc...) it is just the stores that switched to KWik E Marts will have more .

Small town?

Bigger than NL's biggest city. Actually, it's 1/5 of NL.
