Default Reunited Van Halen Eyeing Fall Arena Run

Reunited Van Halen Eyeing Fall Arena Run

By Ray Waddell
Billboard

A proposed summer amphitheater tour by a reunited Van Halen that was derailed when guitarist Eddie Van Halen checked into rehab now looks like it may be resurrected as a fall arena run. Several arena holds are in place in major markets for potential Van Halen dates, Billboard.com has learned.

The tour, negotiations for which were first tipped here on Jan. 24, would feature David Lee Roth, Eddie and Alex Van Halen and Eddie Van Halen's teenage son Wolfgang on bass.

Wheels had been in motion for a 40-date, Live Nation-produced amphitheater tour, with original frontman Roth back in the fold for the first time in more than 20 years. Van Halen last toured in 2004 with vocalist Sammy Hagar, grossing nearly $40 million, according to Billboard Boxscore.

But the reunion never got off the ground, and Eddie Van Halen entered a rehabilitation facility for undisclosed reasons in March. In the months since, the artist has been seen publicly looking healthy and fit.

The buzz surrounding the prospect of a Van Halen tour with Roth seems to point toward a successful trek. "I see it absolutely as an inevitability," Roth told Billboard.com more than a year ago regarding a tour with his ex-bandmates. "To me, it's not rocket surgery. It's very simple to put together. And as far as hurt feelings and water under the dam, like what's-her-name says to what's-her-name at the end of the movie 'Chicago' -- 'So what? It's showbiz!'"

No Michael Anthony, no deal.

I'd pay the mercenary money The Police want to see the absolute original Van Halen.

I still can't believe Valerie is still letting her teenage son (still a minor) on this tour. How many times have VH tried to do a reunion tour now? Every other time it's been a disaster.

To consider it a "reunion" tour without founding member Michael Anthony is indeed a travesty. I agree with dlemond wholeheartedly.

Oh No

Even though I've been a huge Van Halen fan for nearly 20 years and listen to their music all the time, I am getting sick to death with how Eddie and Alex mess with the minds of their fans. And Roth is no better. After all, where were those three guys when Van Halen was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall Of Fame earlier this year? I was really excited about the Roth-Van Halen runion tour earlier this year, but now I'm not. Here are a few thoughts:

1. Van Halen is not Van Halen without Michael Anthony. I honestly thought that with Eddie off the booze that he would patch things up with Mike. Clearly, there are more problems in the VH camp then Eddie's drinking problem. There is also his Titanic size ego. Do you guys and gals remember when Eddie was one of the nicest guys in rock? Just a cool, normal fellow who simply was one of the greatest guitar players ever.

2. I have no deisre to see a 16-year old bass player in Mike's place. I don't care how talented Wolfgang may or may not be. If he is talented, then let him go out and form his own band. He doesn't belong in a band with a 30-year history.

3. What I've always (well, used to) loved about Van Halen is how they wanted to move on. When Roth left in 1985 they brought in Sammy. When Sammy left in 1996 they brought in Gary Cherone. Sure, things didn't work out with Mr. Cherone, but at least the band was trying to move on and not fall back on past glories. A runion with Dave is a pure nostalgia trip.

4. A lot of people think that with Dave back in Van Halen that it will be the 1984 era all over again. This is a nice dream, but it has no basis in reality. 23 years have passed since then. Not counting his 2002 tour with Sammy, Dave has not been a regular live performer in over a decade. I just don't think that Dave has it in him anymore to put on arena sized shows.

5. I really do not think this tour will even happen. Something will go wrong. It always does with these guys.

I will continue to love the music of Van Halen, but in my mind they are a band that broke up 10 years ago. The last decade (which has included only one album of new material) has been nothing but a joke with these guys.

Well said, Mike, I could not have put it better myself. I don't see this tour happening myself, and if it does, I don't see it lasting long. Every time they try, something goes wrong. I think it will be David Lee Roth falling off the stage and breaking a hip. Sorry, I couldn't resist.
