Default THE LAST WORD ON 'THE SOPRANOS'

This is the last "Sopranos" column ever.

I mean it. After this, I plan on never writing about that show again.

I shouldn't even be writing about it now, except that the topic refuses to go away, even though it's been three weeks since the show ended June 10.

Since then, the chatter about the final scene - what it meant, what it didn't mean, who liked it, who didn't like it - has not abated.

Every time I turn around, someone is commenting on the finale.

Never has a TV show been talked about this long after it retired.

About a week after the finale aired, I sensed the buzz dying down. And then the Clintons came along with their own "Sopranos" spoof and the whole subject came up for conversation again.

We went from debating the quality of the original to discussing the value of the Clintons' version.

I have one thing to say about the Clintons' "Sopranos" video - actually, a rhetorical question: Shouldn't a United States senator and an ex-president have better things to do than to go around producing parodies of popular TV shows? Or, to put it another way: Is Hillary Clinton running for president or editor of Mad magazine?

Bill and Hillary Clinton taking their seats at the post-"Sopranos" circus means the significance of TV shows has been blown far out of proportion.

Here's a reality check: "The Sopranos" is over. Get over it.

Some of you might think that someone like me - who toils in the business of watching and writing about TV shows every day - would have developed a more worshipful attitude toward TV in general.

But I haven't. I actually feel the opposite way. As much as I enjoy some TV shows, I consider all of them disposable. I never tape or DVR TV shows. If I miss an episode of a show, I don't ever regret it. Why? Because, like subway trains and elevators, another one will come along right behind it.

People make this assumption that my home must be filled floor-to-ceiling with two decades' worth of all the free VHS cassettes and DVDs the networks have sent me over the years.

The truth is, I have kept none of them. What would be the point? To keep watching them over and over again?

No way, José.

Once a TV show is over, it is time to move on to the next one.

Most of the time, I loved "The Sopranos" about as much as anyone. But the real enjoyment came with seeing each episode for the first time.

"The Sopranos" is gone. Enough already.

I haven't heard a word lately about The Sopranos until I read this grouch's column. Someone needs a hug, or something, lol.
