Default NBC's short-lived Studio 60 Comes to DVD...

Complete with extras including pilot commentary and a brand-new documentary, STUDIO 60 ON THE SUNSET STRIP gets its DVD debut (and finale) this October from Warner. A six disc set that will set you back $59.98, the set will contain every one of the show's one-hour 22 episodes. I personally think the show had potential and I found it amazingly good, especially the banter between Danny and Matt and Jordan and Jack. Not to mention one of the most fantastic pilots I've ever seen guest-starring a spellbinding Judd Hirsch. Alas, the American public just wasn't ready for such a sophisticated show that asked us to think. I've come to the conclusion that most of us don't want to have any involvement in our favorite series, that we just want the writers and actors to do all the work so we don't have to do any thinking on our own. This was what ultimately caused the quick cancellation of the witty 80's comedy POLICE SQUAD! The plot has to be laid out for us so that we say "Wow, I got that! That was funny! Ha, Ha!", which is not the way it's supposed to be. Let me ellaborate because I know I'm probably not making any sense yet: shows like I LOVE LUCY did NOT just hand you the jokes. It laid out a plot that you HAD to follow and most of the time the plots were so intricate that I'm amazed anybody could get through a half-hour of the show without their heads spinning (I often find myself rewinding ALOT when watching pre-Seinfeld television). The jokes were usually within the plot, while today the jokes are just right there at the top of the barrel, and cause an instant laugh. Back then it often took a good 15 to 30 seconds before you recognized a hilarious joke and simply broke out in laughter. The jokes were more scarce back in the day, but the laughs more much more hearty. Now that was a comedic example, but the logic could be implied for any type of show currently on the airwaves (save game shows which of course require some kind of intelligence (unless you're watching DEAL OR NO DEAL where pig herders with an IQ of 12 can get on the show just because they have some kind of a cute quality about them)).

The show was one of the top shows for DVR however throughout its 10-month run, simply because it was the I LOVE LUCY of its time in a sense, CHALLENGING the mind to accept and absorb all of the hectic surroundings of a fictional late-night sketch comedy show. That concludes my mini-rant and I close this post with an urge to everyone here to give the show a shot on DVD, it'll be worth your while. Bravo Aaron Sorkin!
