Indiana State Fair Believed To Be First To Dump Trans Fat

Indianapolis -- The Indiana State Fair said Tuesday it will be the first fair in the U.S. to ban cooking oils high in ingredients that cause "bad" cholesterol.

The move comes on the heels of similar announcements from fast-food chains in recent months.

The Indiana State Fair, widely known for delicacies such as deep-fried Twinkies, elephant ears and the King Tater, said the change is being made to make Hoosiers healthier.

Vendors at the fair will be told to use the new cooking oil, and at least one concessionaire said using the lower-fat oil actually makes the food taste better.

"I'm glad this new zero trans fat oil makes the food healthier to eat," said John Barto, owner of Barto's Banquets and Catering. "It adds to the quality of the food we serve."

Barto uses an oil that is a combination of canola and sunflower oils, instead of partially hydrogenated oil.

"Whatever questions there were about the taste of zero trans fat oils have all but subsided," said Dave Schlabach, executive director of the National Independent Concessionaires Association.

Oils with no trans fat are low in saturated fat and high in monounsaturated fat, which lowers cholesterol.

"Removing cooking oils with trans fat from the state fair is just one more way we can help Hoosiers live healthier lives," said Eric Neuburger, executive director of Indiana's Council for Physical Fitness and Sports.

The Indiana State Fair runs from Aug 8 through 19.
