Default North Carolina hit and run

Does anyone have an update on the following case:

Four African-American teens in North Carolina are driving to Raleigh just before Christmas in 1988. A car with Georgia license plates stalks them and rams them from behind several times ultimately causing the teens to crash and resulting in the death of one of the teens and an amputation of a leg in another. The car from Georgia (containing a caucasian male and female) drives away from the scene and is not apprehended. There was a suspicion that this crime was racially motivated.

Does anyone know if this was ever solved?

One of the survivors of the hit and run actually posted on the board a while back (maybe last year?) saying that the killer had never been caught, but that he and the other survivors were doing well.

That is amazing that the killer has never been caught. I really would have thought that this was one case that would have had a good chance of being solved. IIRC, the car involved was a Monte Carlo with Georgia license plates. One would think that that car was damaged as well and that it wouldn't have been that difficult to track it down.

That's what I thought too. The driver was pretty distinctive looking I thought, and would probably stand out in a crowd. Plus, the Governor of the state this happened in at the time offered a pretty substantial reward for anyone that turned in the driver as I recall. Unless this guy is just hiding out in the boondocks somewhere.

I think this guy has probably been caught in the meantime- this was nearly 20 years ago and I find it hard to believe that somebody who hates black people so much as to run complete strangers minding their own business off the road has not carried on behaving in this way and is probably either in jail or has been for similar crimes.

good point, James. I always thought there were some cases that had updates, but we've just never learned of them. We all know Lifetime has dropped the ball on things like this many times. Plus with well over 1,000 segments, I don't know how they can keep track of the latest info on all of them. And with a lot of cases, there is next to nothing on the internet about them. So mabye there is an update to this case, as with others, and we just haven't heard about it.

Its been mentioned on this board before, but a few years ago someone contacted me who thinks she knows who is responsible for the crime. She wanted a copy of the segment to see if the composite sketch resembled the person she thinks may have been responsible and it did. I kept in contact with her shortly after and I do know that she did go to the police and they interviewed her and she told them what she knew. She became increasingly afraid that her identity would be revealed so she even had her username changed. She did tell me the person whom she thinks is responsible was currently in jail on an unrelated charge. I haven't heard from her in years. I'm sure there is no update in this case since one of the people that was in the car posted on here months back and he didn't mention anything about it.

I sure hope that the person who did this is still in the joint. Even if it is for an unrelated crime.

It's interesting that the focus always seemed to be on the man when the woman in the car with him is just as guilty as he is. Even if she didn't encourage the attack, she's still an accomplice to murder because she didn't stay on scene or come forward at a later time.

I wonder if Crystal's contact also knew who the woman was, and if she communicated this to the police along with her information on the man. She deserves to be in jail along with her companion.
