Default Paris, out of jail first thing first she got a haircut right after she got sprung.

Paris Hilton out of jail, food, a pink-frosted cake and a hair appointment.

Just hours after her release from jail, a family friend told the US magazine, PEOPLE,: "She has been missing her pets a lot. And she loves fast food. She's looking forward to In-N-Out Burger and Taco Bell."

Hours later, two representatives from Taco Bell, a Mexican fast-food chain, arrived at the family's Bel-Air mansion loaded with bags of taquitos and chips for their famous customer.

But when the Taco Bell employees announced their delivery into the Hilton's intercom, they were told to hand the food out to the gathered media and police.

Release a media circus

Amid scenes remniscent of a Hollywood opening night, the hotel heiress and reality TV star smiled and waved through a scrum of cameras and cheering fans after yesterday completing a three-week jail term in California for probation violation.

Paparazzi, fans, police watch Paris leave jail »

Wearing a ponytail and short-sleeved blouse, Hilton, 26, ran to hug her mother Kathy, who was waiting outside the jail in a black car with father, Rick Hilton, at 12.15am local time (5.15pm AEST).

Chased by photographers in the air and on the street, the celebutante and her parents drove to her grandparents' mansion in fashionable Holmby Hills. She spent the morning behind the mansion's gates while people in more than a dozen cars came and went, AP reported.

At one point, a black Cadillac Escalade arrived carrying balloons and a cake with the words "Welcome Home" in pink frosting. At another, a van from Dream Catchers Hair Extensions, Hilton's own company, passed through the gates. Dream Catchers receptionist Crystal Armijo confirmed the heiress was having extensions added to her hair.

Celebrity website TMZ.com later released a note the heiress had penned, thanking its editor for "unbiased" reporting of her case.

The exuberance was in stark contrast to the last time Hilton had been seen in public. On June 8, she was weeping and wailing as she was dragged back to jail after a judge over-ruled a sheriff's decision to free her for unspecified medical reasons after just three days.

But her departure just after midnight resembled an A-list fashion event, with a blizzard of camera flashes greeting her as she emerged from the gritty Century Regional Detention Facility, seeming to try to look a touch demure but breaking into her usual catwalk strut.

Sheriff's spokesman Steve Whitmore said Hilton had thanked guards, nurses and other staff before leaving, describing her as friendly.

"She has fulfilled her obligation. It's now completed," Mr Whitmore said, admitting that the frenzy surrounding Hilton's case was almost unprecedented.

"We've had high profile cases before, people like Mr (O.J.) Simpson, and going back to the 1960s there was Charles Manson, so we're not strangers to these sorts of cases," he said. "But this is at a different level. The attention on this case has been remarkable."

Neighbours angry

Television helicopters pursued Hilton's cavalcade accompanying her as the car took to the highway shortly after her release.

After stopping at a red light, chasing photographers leapt out to grab shots before Hilton's car pulled away. She was later reported to have joined her parents at a family property in exclusive Bel Air.

The media scrum initially provided some mild entertainment for bemused neighbours out for an early walk, but that quickly turned to anger and frustration.

"I'm trying to get my daughter to her dance class," one fed up resident said as she called police on her mobile phone while stuck in traffic.

Lavish party plans denied

Kathy and Rick Hilton were rumoured to have planned a lavish coming-out party in Las Vegas, Fox News said. But reports on Monday quoted family and friends as saying that a "quiet gathering" was planned.

The heiress to the Hilton hotel empire was jailed for violating probation over a conviction for alcohol-related reckless driving, drawing frenzied media attention.

The self-described blonde icon was sentenced to jail in May. She had been handed 36 months' probation after driving her Mercedes with an alcohol level equal to the legal limit, but was then twice caught driving on her suspended license.

On the first occasion, Hilton signed a statement acknowledging that she was not supposed to drive, and was let off with a warning. But the next month police pulled her over in her $190,000 Bentley Continental GTC when they spotted her driving at night with the headlights off.

Hilton's release from jail after a few days behind bars this month saw accusations of "celebrity justice" leveled at Los Angeles sheriff's before Hilton was returned to jail.

Sentence 'longer than normal'

However an exhaustive study of similar cases conducted by The Los Angeles Times indicated that Hilton was being treated unusually severely, receiving a much longer jail sentence than normal.

During her time behind bars Hilton said in a telephone interview with a television journalist that the sentence was a message from God to change her party-loving lifestyle and become a positive role model for women.

"I have been thinking that I want to do different things when I am out of here," she said. "I have become much more spiritual. God has given me this new chance."

She said she was considering pursuing work to raise awareness about breast cancer or multiple sclerosis.

Hilton is mainly well-known for being rich and famous, and shot to international fame thanks largely to a sex tape of her and an-ex boyfriend which appeared on the Internet.

She has also released a music album and appeared in films such as House of Wax, Pledge This, and the forthcoming The Hottie and the Nottie.

Her first post-prison interview will be held with veteran CNN anchor Larry King on Wednesday. The network and a spokesman for Hilton said the celebrity would not receive payment for the interview.

In a statement released through her publicist, Hilton said she was pleased to go on the show, "to discuss my experience in jail, what I have learned, how I have grown."

With all the media attention she's gotten, you'd think this was Nelson Mandela leaving prison. What is the big deal about her, anyway?

^I've been asking that question for years.
I miss the days when you thought of the city when you heard the word Paris, not the famous-for-nothing whore.
