Default What singer or bands are responsible for creating the 80s sound?

Here is mine:

Blondie
The B-52s
Duran Duran
Queen
A Flock of Seagulls

What is yours? It doesn't have to be remotely 80s...you could as far back as you could go. Just wish musician or bands do you think was responsible for creating the 80s sound in general?

One group that no one has mentioned that had a huge influence on the 80's sound was Def Leppard. The way they wove the hard rock guitar sound with the melodic sensibilities of soft rock was mirrored by so many other artists during the 1980's.

Yeah, but Bon Jovi was pretty much just a cross between the Def Leppard style of radio friendly hard rock with Bruce Springsteen like working class lyrics.

Alot of the successful 80's acts got their start in the 70's. Shonen Knife was never that popular in the U.S. but that's the way it is with some acts, Some countries embrace them and others don't. Shonen Knife was formed in 1981 but were rarely played on MTV which may explain why.

I also forgot Hall & Oates!! They first came to national attention in the mid-1970s, but they had a white hot streak going on in the 1980s. Almost every single they released from 1980-1984 went Top 10, and "Kiss On My List", "Private Eyes", "I Can't Go For That (No Can Do)", "Maneater" and "Out of Touch" all hit #1 in that era. "I Can't Go For That" has been sampled in quite a few songs in recent years, including Simply Red's "Sunrise".

In August 2002, I saw H&O in concert in Cleveland with Todd Rundgren. It was an awesome show, and H&O are still recording and touring today. Their songs still hold up now.
