Exclamation 'Evan Almighty' cursed at box office

LOS ANGELES (Reuters) - "Evan Almighty" did not live up to its name at the weekend box office in North America.

The most expensive comedy ever made -- with an official price tag of $175 million -- opened at No. 1 with an estimated three-day haul of $32.1 million, said distributor Universal Pictures on Sunday.

The opening for the comic take on the Noah's Ark story is one of the lowest this summer, a lucrative season when the studios tend to roll out sequels and movies with lots of special effects. New entries in the "Spider-Man," "Shrek" and "Pirates of the Caribbean" franchises have already set various records.

Not so with "Evan Almighty," a sequel of sorts to the 2003 Jim Carrey comedy "Bruce Almighty," which opened to $68 million during its first three days. The new film stars Steve Carell, who had a supporting role in the first one, long before he found fame with the TV series "The Office" and the 2005 hit comedy "The 40-Year-Old Virgin."

While no one expected "Evan Almighty" to reach the stratospheric levels of its predecessor, observers had predicted it would open in the mid-$30 million range, possibly breaking $40 million. Executives at rival studios said the film needed to break $50 million to have a shot of making money.

A spokeswoman at Universal said the opening was a few million dollars short of internal expectations, but she hoped that strong word of mouth would buoy business in the coming weeks. Universal is a unit of General Electric Co.'s NBC Universal Inc.

Wow. I like Steve Carell, and have no doubt he'll bounce right back. Seeing as Jim Carrey turned down the opportunity to do a sequel to Bruce Almighty, they wrote this around the bit character Carell played instead. Probably not a good idea.

Aw, I just saw this movie today with my family and we all thought it was cute. A little hokey at times, but that's to be expected with a PG comedy Steve Carrell is a funny guy!

Wow, $175 million to make the movie. It must be loaded with special effects. I like Steve Carell myself, but I didn't think he had the clout to have that kind of money invested in a movie he's carrying. He's not a household name.

To spend that kind of money on a non blockbuster kind of movie is a big risk.

I seriously doubt "Evan Almighty" will make a ton of dough, and I doubt this will sour Hollywood's attitude towards Steve Carell.
He is one of the funniest men on TV and movies right now.

This will not stop him from working.

He's currently working on a new "Get Smart" movie and aside from the new season of "The Office" he has a few more movies on his plate that he is working on.

He is a talented, gifted man. He has a great career that will only get better.

Also, I read that a lot of folks in the media were speculating whether "Evan Almighty" would attract a big Christian crowd with it's biblical themes, etc...

So I'm sure we'll be reading some articles this week on how the movie didn't reach the "Passion Of the Christ" crowd, blah blah blah...

Why would a movie be called similarly to Jim Carrey's movie BRUCE ALMIGHTY? I thought that the first time I seen the commercial for this movie.

Why was this movie so expensive????? That should have been a clue right there. No movie other than an epic or a special effects movie like Titanic or something similar should ever cost so much money.

Can someone please tell me why this movie cost so much to make? I honestly don't know.

It's getting slaughtered by the critics.

Good question - I don't know why they needed to use $175 million. I've seen reviews that just hammered it.

I asked that question myself and I am still waiting...

Did the animals get "overpaid"?
