Why do people on here seem to hate Rebecca so much? As far as I'm concerned if Shelly had stayed on the show it would have only lasted 1 maybe 2 more seasons. They couldn't have maintained it and it would have become boring. Kirstie Alley breathed new life into Cheers. As much as I loved Diane back then, when I watch re-runs I get annoyed by her. The Rebecca years where far better, as it wasn't just based around 2 characters anymore. I always thought that her and Sam were more suited to eachother anyway and would have enjoyed it if they had ended up together. But please give Kirstie a break as Cheers would have ended years earlier if it not for her.

I agree with you that Alley breathed new life into the show. I think some fans just resent that she replaced Diane and it ended the Sam/ Diane romance.

Rebecca was a lot better than Diane and improved the show greatly. I always found Diane a little anoying.

The Rebecca character seemed to lack real focus ( Of course, that was the writers fault, not Kirsties ) Was she Sams new romance? Was she a golddiging slut? Was she a woman for whom her career was uppermost in her life? The answer was always cloudy and even more so with the "Sam And Becky try to have a baby" story loop. I totally dissagree that Back seat Becky refreshed the show, basically, when Diane left, the show lost its heart, and Sam regressed into a worst dog then before and a moral bankrupt. I loved Cheers from show 1 to the end but, the post Shelly Long years will never be as good as the first 5 , to me.

I don't hate Rebecca. I'm just not fond of the whiny Rebecca. I like episodes in the Rebecca years but too much Rebecca is a bad thing to me. I can watch her be whiny but that gets annoying after awhile. Much like how Diane is somewhat annoying in some episodes in the first half of season 5.

I really ended up liking Rebecca a lot when initially I didn't care much for her character on the show. It's pretty funny the way they broke her down from her first day at the bar, portraying herself as this uppity snobbish strong-willed woman to just being another one of the "regulars" who really was insecure, lonely, and a little neurotic at times. When this side of her came out, it made for some of the funniest scenes; her trying to seduce Sam at her apartment when she was rejected by Evan Drake, her telling the story of how she lost out on her dream job because she got so nervous she blew the interview (and passed this on to Norm..lol), how she got drunk at the Gaines' and made an ass of herself. I personally liked the contrast between her role and that of Diane, and I agree that her arrival brought new life to the show.

I'm not a fan of Rebecca, but without Kirstie coming and Shelley leaving the show wouldn't have lasted as long as it did. I love the character Diane and the whole Sam & Diane romance, and I prefer that to any Rebecca moment, but the Sam & Diane storyline wouldn't have lasted much longer after the fifth season.
The reason I don't like Rebecca is because she was very, very whiny and I never liked the idea of her and Sam together. I laughed at her occasionaly but it was because she just seemed to have the worst luck and acted like such a loser at times. Jessica |

I don't hate Becky, but I do enjoy the warring couple of Sam and Diane more than the dynamics between Sam and Becky. Every week was the same thing with Rebecca... Sam trying to seduce her. At least with Diane there was always something Diane was trying to get Sam into doing something he didn't want to do. On a scale of 1 to 10, Diane was a 9 and Rebecca was a 7.
