Alright, let's spice things up a little bit on this board, it gets very slow around here. So, who are your favorite DVD commentators? This just came to me and I thought it'd be an interesting thread to see who makes you just want to keep listening to them for hours. You can do this by show or by person.
One of my favorite shows for commentary is FAMILY GUY. No matter who the "mediator", creator and star Seth MacFarlane, sits with, it's always an interesting experience. They have terrific insights and are just laugh-out-loud funny. A particular commentator I enjoy listening to has done commentaries for the likes of TOP CAT and TOM AND JERRY Volume One. I've yet to listen to the TOP CAT commentaries on my complete series set, but Jerry Beck's TOM AND JERRY commentaries are some of the best I've ever heard. He knows so much, compared to other commentators who are like "Wow I wonder who did that..." or "I don't remember that...", but Jerry seems to be chock-full of animation know-how and expertise. Top-rate auditory experience for fans and animation lovers alike. It was also a joy to hear what Dick Van Dyke and Carl Reiner had to say for THE DICK VAN DYKE SHOW, Bob Newhart's notes on BOB NEWHART, Allan Melvin's take on SGT. BILKO, Chris Mann for THREE'S COMPANY, and the SEINFELD commentators always pull off a great commentary. On the movie front, I enjoyed Chevy Chase's commentaries for the VACATION first two films, Bob Burns and Bill Warren and Joe Dante on THE WAR OF THE WORLDS, Jim Cameron and Bill Wisher on TERMINATOR 2, and the outstanding commentary tracks on the BACK TO THE FUTURE films with Bob Gale and Neil Canton. I just listened the other day to a commentary on the second set for THE FLINTSTONES by Jerry Eisenberg, Earl Kress, and Scott Shaw, and that was outstanding as well. What are your picks and why? |

My favorite comentaries come from my favorite show, NewsRadio. It contains commentaries from creator Paul Simms, actors Dave Foley, Stephen Root, Andy Dick, Joe Rogan, Maura Tierney, Vicki Lewis and Khandi Alexander as well as crew members and even one by Warren Littlefield (then President of NBC).
Seasons 3 and 4 had some really bad commentary tracks, but they also had some really good ones, as did the rest of the series. Another favorite of mine is the Futurama commentaries. Every single episode has a commentary track on it. |

I totally agree with your choice of various cast & crew of The Bob Newhart Show. Those commentaries are a lot of fun.

I enjoy listening to Lucie Arnaz, Desi Jr and Carol Burnett on the Here's Lucy dvd. It also has a lot of good bonus material on all 4 discs.

The Golden Girls are good, and the commentaries on Ellen DVD sets are fun too.

Seinfeld has some good ones, and like NewsRasio, the appear on nearly every episode. All the cast members participate, but the best comentary team is Julia Louis-Dreyfus and Jason Alexander, they really hold nothng back and laugh at the scenes a lot. |

I listened to one Newsradio commentary so far for "Pilot." I decided to finish my first and second seasons set (the episodes) before I continued with the commentaries. I only got two episodes left then I will begin the remaining 19 commentaries, which is the highest amount of commentaries I've EVER seen for any DVD set. It was good though, and I thoroughly enjoyed it.
MY NAME IS EARL's commentaries were good too but not that memorable that I'll remember what those guys said 10 years from now. I completely forgot about the HERE'S LUCY commentaries, which were simply fantastic. And I agree that Julia and Jason provide the best SEINFELD commentaries. Wow, great input and I think this board is finally starting to get active again. |
