Default NBC Meeting With Jon Stewart To Take Over Late Night Spot

COMEDIAN Jon Stew art, the host of Comedy Central's "Daily Show," is being romanced by NBC.

The TV world was all abuzz yesterday over a report that Stewart had met recently with NBC chief Jeff Zucker and NBC/Universal co-chair Marc Graboff.

"It was a friendly, exploratory dinner," a source told The Post yesterday.

"Nothing specific was discussed, but they're obviously Stewart fans at NBC."

The story was first reported by Broadcasting & Cable, the authoritative trade magazine.

Stewart is locked into his Comedy Central contract through next year.

While he has been the subject of recurring speculation about moving to one of the major networks, it was not immediately clear what show NBC has in mind for him.

The answer to that question is of huge interest to Jay Leno and Conan O'Brien.

"Late Night" host O'Brien has been anointed Leno's successor when the "Tonight Show" host retires, ostensibly in 2009.

That scenario would create an opening for someone to replace O'Brien as host of "Late Night."

But there have been rumblings that NBC might keep ratings winner Leno a bit longer - and buy O'Brien out for a reported $40 million.

So is NBC eyeing Stewart for O'Brien's slot - or, perhaps, for the "Tonight Show" after Leno retires?

NBC officials and Stewart's agent declined to comment yesterday.

Either way, it could be a tough sell to lure Stewart to NBC, since he's reportedly hot on replacing CBS' David Letterman on "The Late Show" when Letterman, who's signed through 2010, calls it quits.

In 2002, Stewart was a candidate to replace Letterman when the "Late Show" host was considering jumping to ABC.

During their meeting with Stewart, Zucker and Graboff "made their interest known in finding a way to do business together if Jon was ever available," a source told B&C.

Also in the NBC mix is former "Saturday Night Live" trouper Jimmy Fallon, who signed a holding deal with the network last February.

Fallon said on Howard Stern's radio show yesterday that he will replace O'Brien - if and when O'Brien replaces Leno.

But the "Late Night" slot is only "one possibility" for Fallon, according to an insider.

"As the Late night turns" But seriously, I wouldnt mind seeing Jon on the Late Show.......gives a clear alternative to the Tonight Show when Dave leaves.....on the other hand, it would kill the Daily Show, which would be a real shame

Cool

I would rather see Jon on the Tonight Show rather than Conan O'Brien.

When Craig Kilborn left The Daily Show in 1998, I thought that the show was doomed; that it would just be a blip in people's radar ten years later.

I was wrong. Not only did Jon Stewart make The Daily Show lightyears better, but he made people forget Craig Kilborn hosted the show for its first two and a half years. He made The Daily Show his own.

I seriously hope Jon Stewart doesn't leave The Daily Show anytime soon. He's already done the late night talk show thing, and, while his show was good, it wasn't nearly as good as TDS.

Stay put, Jon!

I want Jon Stewart to stay with "The Daily Show." That's where he belongs. I also DON'T want Jimmy Fallon to replace Conan. I can't stand Jimmy Fallon! What makes NBC think he can interview celebrities? Maybe I'm wrong, maybe he can. But I still don't want him to.

Whichever way this goes, it'll be interesting. I sure hope Conan and the Max Weinberg 7 stay together!!
