Oh No Bob Barker Endorses Rosie O'Donnell as a Possible Successor

LOS ANGELES - Bob Barker endorsed his friend Rosie O'Donnell as a possible successor on "The Price Is Right," although the newly retired host isn't sure CBS wants a woman to take over the game show.

"I believe they're going to have a meeting with Rosie," Barker said backstage Friday night at the Daytime Emmy Awards, where he won his 19th trophy.

"She knows the show," he said. "There's no doubt in my mind she could do the show. Now, whether they want a lady host, I don't know. I've never heard that discussed. As far as I know, they've only auditioned men."

Barker said his friendship with O'Donnell goes back several years, when she had him as a guest on her old daytime talk show.

"She told me she loved `The Price Is Right' and wanted to host it one day," he recalled.

Among those mentioned as possible replacement hosts have been Todd Newton of the E! network, Mark Steines of "Entertainment Tonight," George Hamilton and John O'Hurley.

Barker retired last week at age 83 after 35 years of giving away vacations and cars on the hit CBS game show. But he said he may be back with some specials featuring vintage clips and guests.

"If it works out, I'd like to do that," he said.

That's very unlikely to happen. Generally, there's nothing wrong with a woman hosting a game show(ask Meredith Viera and Betty White), but Rosie O'Donnell hosting The Price is Right? I don't see that happening-she's not only too much of a loose cannon, but she isn't game show hosting material. George Hamilton isn't game show hosting material, either, John O'Hurley will be too busy hosting Family Feud and Mark Steines is a good enough anchorman on ET, but he lacks game show hosting experience. It has to be Todd Newton-he's available to take the reigns of hosting The Price is Right, he has the most experience with the show, especially with hosting TPIR Live in Las Vegas and he's also attended tapings and taken notes on the show. Todd Newton succeeding Bob Barker as host of TPIR makes a lot of sense-he's the most qualified to take the reigns and he knows how to do the show. Fremantle and CBS need to fully understand if they're looking for Bob Barker's most qualified successor, it's Todd Newton. I definitely wouldn't at all mind Rich Fields announcing for Todd Newton on The Price is Right, next season. After all, Todd hosting TPIR Live should account for something.

I'd rather see Dave Price.

Thumbs down

Well there goes about 50% of the loyal audience if she comes... Just no.

If CBS/Freemantle is even considering her, then I'm really concerned, because it must mean the other candidates weren't that good. Are they really that stupid that they haven't been planning for Bob's retirement for YEARS?

Speaking of Dave Price, with Alex Trebek now contemplating retirement as host of Jeopardy, he could be considered to succeed Alex. Alex actually said recently after Bob Barker's retirement as host of The Price is Right, he might consider retirement, himself. Well, Alex has hosted Jeopardy for 23 years, so I think in case he does announce his own retirement, Dave Price should be in the mix for Alex's possible successors. Don't worry about Pat Sajak-he's not going anywhere. He continues to do a good enough job, hosting Wheel of Fortune.

No, no, no!! Please no!! I'd rather be tied to a chair and be forced to watch The View.

Relax, Cat! Rosie O'Donnell isn't game show hosting material. Fremantle and CBS would be wise to avoid Rosie as Bob Barker's successor. Yes, Bob was due to eventually retire, but as far as his successor is concerned, see posting no. 2-it explains why Todd Newton is the most qualified candidate to succeed Bob Barker as host of The Price is Right. Rosie is too much of a loose cannon and she would be highly undependable to be a TV game show host. Besides that, she has no game show hosting experience. Others will probably disagree with me, but TPIR is ready for Todd Newton to take the reigns as host.

^ (takes deep breath and counts to ten) Thanks, I feel better now. Rosie hosting the Price is Right - what a nightmare that would be. When are they supposed to announce the new host, btw?

Hopefully soon, and hopefully, for the sake of TPIR fans, Fremantle and CBS will select Todd Newton as Bob Barker's successor.

No offense to Rosie, but CBS should end the show, because no one can replace Bob Barker. For heavens sakes he was on that show for 35 years. I remember when the show first started. Bob Barker is a national icon.

Before that he did another show "Truth or Consequences" for 15 years. No one was able to replace him on that show either.

Most people tune into the The Price is Right, because of Bob Barker.

No one can replace Bob Barker, but why try, anyway! There's a difference between replacing someone and succeeding them. Bob will never be replaced, not by anyone, but he will be succeeded. He did say on E! News Daily that he would like his successor to make TPIR his own show and host the show his way. A replacement would attempt to copycat him, but a successor would make the show all his own and host the show, his way and not copycat Bob. The Price is Right will go on, but expect Bob's successor to make the show his own, be himself and host the show, his way-no copycats. I hope you understand the difference between replacement and succession in the game show industry.

Bob!? Are you going senile in retirement? 1000 people off the street would be better than Rosie!! Hell, the models could probably do better.

I predict that The Price is Right will not survive without Bob Barker. I will give it a year or maybe 2 and then the show will be canceled due to low ratings. I believe that most people tuned in for Bob Barker, rather than for the show itself. But time will tell whether or not this show will survive
