Default Mel wasn't fat to me, I never understood why so many fat jokes on him

He was kind of stocky, but nowhere near fat. Did anyone else think he was fat?

I didn't think he was really that fat either. I guess they thought it would be funny to have the fat jokes. They've done that on other shows too.

Not even. And the fat jokes seemed kinda lame. However, back then, I guess that would be considered fat. Or the fact that everyone else in the diner was so damn thin, seeing him makes you think he is fat.

Well he definitely has a belly on him. He's not obese by any means, but I wouldn't say he's simply "stocky" either--to me stocky means you have pretty thick arms and legs too, just thick all over. Mel doesn't seem thick all over, he seems thickest in his belly. So I can see why they'd use fat jokes, especially since, yes, the 3 waitresses were slim.

It made sense to use on Rerun from What's Happening! But, they were constantly used in every script to the point it got repetitive and not funny. One fat joke too many whether he was fat or not.

Yeah, he may've had a belly on him but to call him fat? No, not at all.

Mel had definitely had a gut on him, a beer belly, but that was it. He was not even in the league of Ralph Kramden or Rerun!

Ralph and Rerun were definitely obese, not just "fat".
