Since I have to explain this, let's look at that quote again:
"I waited tables when I was younger, and every time I made a mistake, it came out of my pocket."
Of course it came out of her pocket. She was the waitress, and she made the mistake, so of course she was gonna pay for it.
"Facts of Life", folks!
She was using this to get Tootie to pay full price for a cold pizza, after the pizza place apparently told her they'd let her have it for $10 instead of $12?!?
Go figure.

I watched the episode the other day, and what Tootie said was that the waitress 'goofed' and gave her the wrong change, that is why she got the pizza for $10 instead of for $12 - not because it was cold pizza.

But Mrs. Garrett is just making a point, that it's the waitress whose pockets will be 'short of cash' that day.
