Default Trophy

Anybody???
I think its the very start of the show, before the theme song starts.
Sam tries to explain why you need to work hard and be dilegent and earn a trophy. Woody has his own view.

thanks

I think woody was talking to fraiser not sam. Sorry I can't remember the ep, I'm watching every episode of cheers from the begining, when I get to the one with the trophy I'll post the name here.

Ok its episode 10.17, "A Diminished Rebecca with a Suspended Cliff", the one with woody's cousin and cliff's new uniform. Incedently, the scene with the trophy is the first time you see fraiser with a beard.

Sorry I don't know where to get a video of it.

I am going to have to say that I have "no" memory of this episode! However, according to my experiences, people who contemplate buying a trophy tend to be people who either do not possess the skills to win one on their own or people who are not willing to do the work that winning one would involve. One thing that I do remember is the fact that on the first season with Woody in it, we learn that he "had" won a bunch of trophies in bowling! For those of you who do not remember, it was the episode shown on Thanksgiving Day 1985. This was the episode in which we end up seeing Diane denonstrating her bowling skills and beating the guys from Gary's Old Town Tavern!

True, but in the above scene between woody and fraiser, woody had just bought a golfing trophy, not bowling. I don't think we've ever seen woody play golf.

My memory of the episode in which Woody buys a golfing trophy is "very" vague! However, because the episode in which we learn about Woody's bowling trophys was "very" shortly after Woody's arrival, it must have been after that. Usually, when I hear about people who want to buy a trophy, I associate it with being a person who have never won a trophy in "anything"! Was it implied that this was the case with Woody? After all, as far as I remember, the trophys that he won in bowling or the man who he disabled while winning one of them were never mentioned again.

Furthermore, in the thread wishing Shelly Long a happy birthday, I am the second respondee and I mentioned what I "marvelous" collection of purses the character of Diane had a how "beautiful" she looked carrying them! The episode regarding Woody's bowling trophys was no exception! When she came to terms with the fact that she could not council Woody back to the alley, she decided that it was up to her! Upon arrival, she informed the gang of the P.E. credit that she earned through bowling in college. While she was boasting, she was carrying an adorable black patient leather shoulder bag! She looked "very" sophisticated setting on the chair to get in her bowling action! Here's to you, Diane Chambers!

This is why you need to hear the dialog of this. Woody, in the end makes total sense of why he bought the trophy. As I remember, pretty clever.

This ep is season 10, I don't think it's on dvd. You may have to wait for it to be shown on tv again.

Heres the dialog, it's the opener before the main song:

Woody walks into the bar holding a trophy in the shape of a golfer, and goes over to where fraiser is sitting
Woody: Hey dr crane, look what I've got.
Fraiser: That's quite a trophy woody, I didn't know you played golf.
Woody: I don't, there's a trophy shop down the street.
Fraiser: You just bought it, you don't even golf?
Woody: Why should I?
Fraiser: Well because the idea of a trophy is to show some sort of accomplishment. You should learn to golf, go out, take a couple of lessons, spend some hours mastering the finer points of the game.
Woody: And then?
Fraiser: Well, you get better and you can join a country club.
Woody: And then?
Fraiser: And then you can compete, maybe enter some tournaments.
Woody: And then?
Fraiser: And then maybe someday you'll be the best and you'll win and you'll get a...
Woody: Trophy, dr crane?
Fraiser shakes woody's hand.
Fraiser: Congratulations, woody!

Hey smartboy, the episode where woody says he's won bowling trophys was early season 4, whereas this ep was late season 10. Thats a long time, the writers probably expected the audience to have forgotten that woody has won trophys in the past.

I still think it's too funny.
Almost as funny as when Norm comes in and says.

It's a dog eat dog world, and I'm wearing milk bone underware.

thanks for posting that, I've been racking my brain to figure out how it went.

thanks again.
