Default Positive Celebrity Encounters

With all the news about Paris Hilton, I thought it would be interesting to have a thread where people can relate and discuss positive encounters they have had with famous people.

Some can be absolute morons, that's true, but there are a great many that I feel are very kind, admirable people, and there are a number are truly inspirational. I like/admire the Bee Gees, Andy Gibb, River Phoenix, the Beatles, Buddy Holly, Karen Carpenter and others, and I've heard lots of positive things about them.

I've heard a lot of positive stories about the Bee Gees and Andy Gibb. I've read hundreds of stories of fans meeting them and they've all reported how nice they are, and how friendly they were. Maurice Gibb (RIP) was particularly friendly and down-to-earth, but Barry and Robin were too. Fans are allowed to wait outside their houses, and if they're not busy, they'll come out, talk to them, have photos taken, etc. They really value their fans, and I've heard the same things about their brother Andy - how polite and nice he was whenever fans approached him.

I know they have/had their faults, but for the most part, I think they are extremely kind people. I tend to get a bit offended on their behalf if ever someone makes fun of them, because they are so much more than simply a "disco band" (although I love their disco songs, they've done much more than that.) They've been releasing songs for almost as long as the Stones. And I do think they deserve a bit more respect than some people give them.

On another forum, I read someone's report of how they met Maurice Gibb and then later Andy Gibb. I copied it over here:

So, to quote "Radiomaniac":

I've met a few great celebs, no nasty ones yet.

Lovely celebs :

Maurice Gibb : I met him in his dressing room after a show he did at a London theatre. He gave me a signed album for my birthday present, I was 14 at the time. He was not only extremely pleasant, he was one of the nicest people I've ever met in my entire life. The very top of my list and never to be beaten.

Andy Gibb : I met Andy before he became a singer. At a concert, he scurried off to get all his older brothers' autographs for me. I asked him to sign as well, he said 'I'm nobody' but I insisted and he laughed and signed. I still have it."

River Phoenix - I think he was a talented actor and I admire the way he stuck to his principles such as animal rights and concern for the environment. He bought several acres of the rainforest in order to preserve it.

Karen Carpenter - another great talent and she seems to have been a very sweet person. She didn't seem to have a lot of self-esteem. I feel so sorry for Karen; she was too young to die.

Wayne Gretzky - Total class in every sense of the word, he made time for the fans even when he was way past scheduled times.

Tommy Lee - Surprisingly incredibly down to earth and approachable. He joked around with all of the backstage staff and invited everyone out to party (that part not as surprising).

Kristen Kreuk (Lana from Smallville) - Total sweetheart who does not come off with any air about her. She was more shy than anything.

Geddy Lee - a quiet, unassuming guy who's never tarnished with fame. Will always be a very good friend.

My husband says John Candy was also a real great guy. Again, very down to earth, charming and appreciative. God I miss him.

Vicki Lawrence is absolutely fab and down-to-earth. Her pictures don't do her justice - she is so ****ing BEAUTIFUL in person. I've met her twice... Last time was in 2004. Last time I met her, I just could not stop looking at her. She was dressed very casually (black turtleneck and light blue jeans) but damn, she just looked amazing. Actually made me jealous, lol. Both times I met her were very positive, by the way.

My dad and stepmom ran into Adam Sandler when they were in Arizona nearly 10 years ago, and they both said he was very nice and funny as hell.

I've heard from people who have met Stepfanie Kramer (in my avatar) in person, and they had nothing but wonderful things to say about her - she is just such a nice & sweet lady. I'd love to meet her someday.

I've met almost all the American Idols from the past two seasons. Not all of them were nice, but some of them really stood out - Ace Young was the sweetest of them all. He made sure everyone got an autograph, a picture, a hug, whatever they wanted. Even the people in the very back of the crowd. And he would talk to you as if you'd been friends forever. So sweet. Bo Bice was the same way, not to the same level as Ace, but very, very sweet. I even had the chance to - sort of - meet Jennifer Hudson. There's this large wall at the Pepsi Arena in Albany and it's made of glass. She came right up to the glass and spoke with my family and I through the glass before leaving. Very sweet!

I haven't met many other celebrities other than American Idol. I met the guitarist of the band Hawthorne Heights and he was extremely down to earth and sweet. There were tons of people there to see him and he spent most of the time with my friend and I. This summer, I'm hoping to meet Karina Smirnoff - who's in my avatar - and I've heard wonderful things about her, so I'm hoping I'll have a positive experience as well!

I've had several. In March 2001, I bumped into Danny Bonaduce at the Universal Citywalk (I was in CA visiting a friend at the time). He was with his daughter, and he signed an autograph for me and took a picture with me. I still have them. He was very nice to me.

I also had the pleasure to meet many of the cast members of Little House in the Prairie in July 2005 at the Tombstone Western Film Festival. Here is my favorite story of that time:

Yes, he was so nice! My little sister was in love with him, and she gave him a little keychain she had, and he gave her a kiss! He was really nice to me too, the only time he faltered was when my uncle couldn't get the camera to work and he seemed a little annoyed that he had to pose for the picture twice. But he was the Idol who came out the most that year. Last year the one who came out the most was Paris, who was ADORABLE in person.

Louie Anderson-I met him in Las Vegas twice and he's a real sweetheart. Once was during a show he did and the second time was at his book signing. He's a very nice guy. Very down-to-Earth and warm. It was alot of fun metting him. He took pictures with me, signed my book and chatted with me a while.

Stephnie Weir(MADtv member from 2000-2006)-By far the nicest person I've ever met. She was performing at the UCB theatre and I got the chance to meet her backstage and she was so nice. She also took a picture with me, gave me her autograph and chatted with me. I actually felt like she was an old friend the way she spoke to me. Very lovely person!! I'd love to meet her again!!

Julianne Moore-Very sweet! Even thought I spoke to her briefly as she was a customer at the restaurant I was hosting at, she was still a sweetheart! She smiled alot and was very nice and her son was a sweetie too!

Dom DeLouise-Funny guy and very sweet!

Of course I'd of loved to have met Vivian Vance, Lucille Ball, Desi Arnaz and Elizabeth Hartman. They all seemed like very nice people with extreme talent!

I met Michael too. Actually bumped into him in NYC in 2005. He was walking(with a limp poor guy)and had sunglasses on but I knew it was him. I smiled and said hello to him and although he was walking he smiled and said hi back. Seemed really nice....I guess he also appreciated the fact that I didn't shout his name or cause a scene.

Very likely - that's actually how most Canadians treat celebrities. We might be dying on the inside, but they always say we're never really intrusive - just acknowledge their presence and move on.

Yes, I've heard Michael is quite nice, but I've never met him. He's from the "other side of town" so to speak.
