I am wondering why Rhoda called Mary "kid"? They were the same age. Was it just a nickname she had for Mary because they were friends?

I think it was probably just a nickname. I've heard Rhoda call Bess Lindstrom "kid" too.

Yeah, I think it was just a "New Yorker" saying that she used.
I call my friends "kid" sometimes - but I'm not from New York - I probably got it from Rhoda! ![]() "Ace" is another nickname she'd use with guys sometimes. |

I really don't remember her calling Brenda kid much at all. Most of the time she called her "Bren"

Thanks for the responses. That helps.
![]() When did Rhoda move back to NY? Why did she leave? It seems strange to think that Rhoda wasn't there during all seven seasons. I'm still trying to play catch up with episodes. I have seen Seasons 1-2, discs 1 & 3 of Season 3. and disc 1 of Season 4. I'm waiting to get to see disc 2 of Season 3, and discs 2 & 3 of Season 4. |

It also makes sense from the POV of experience. Rhoda was the tough girl from NY, had had more experience out in the "cold, hard world", and "little Mary" was the naive innocent girl whose eyes hadn't been opened a whole lot yet. Being so naive and innocent, it sounded appropriate and cute for hardened-by-the-world Rhoda to affectionately call her "kid"---like she was looking out for her.

I've never seen the show Rhoda or the show Phyllis. Did Phyllis leave the show also? It's a shame that Rhoda left. It would seem strange to think that Rhoda and/or Pjyllis weren't on for the duration of The Mary Tyler Moore Show. I bet that was interesting that Phyllis went to Rhoda's wedding.

She was a crasher. ![]() I don't really know why Rhoda called Mary "kid", but it was an affectionate nickname, and stuck. Was Rhoda still calling Mary that in that TV movie that aired a few years back, Kristen?? |

) You might want to check out YouTube, there are several Rhoda clips there, including one scene from the wedding! As for Phyllis' departure from TMTMS, she left at the beginning of S5, and the storyline was that Lars died (so we never did see what he looked like! LOL), and Phyllis and Bess went to live with Lars' family. I haven't seen Phyllis in quite some time, so I'm a bit fuzzy on what the relationships were. I think Phyllis moved in with Lars' mother and stepfather, or vice versa. Can't remember now. Once again, hope that helps! - Kristen |

also; "PHYLISS" wasn't that good. I remember back when it was on, in 1977 or 78 and I thought it was pretty good. But then when NICK AT NITE used to show it, I started to watch one episode and ended up turning it off after 10 minutes.

I'm sorry, I have another question.
In an episode they call Rhoda, Rhoda Fay(spelling?), but in all the previous episodes they call her Rhoda Morgenstern(spelling?) The episode I'm referring to is the one where she falls for a guy who works at the same store she does. Where did the name Fay come from? Thanks. |
