TV Bob Barker Offers to Be `Price' Fill-in

LOS ANGELES - After 35 years as the host of "The Price Is Right," Bob Barker hung up his microphone for good on Wednesday. Or did he?

After taping his last show, the 83-year-old icon said he would happily return to the "Price" stage if a replacement host isn't found by the time the new season starts in the fall.

"They're having trouble finding someone to do the show," Barker told reporters during a post-show press conference. "And I've told members of the staff here that ... if they wanted me to do it for a few more months, I would do it.

"I don't want to walk out on CBS or the company if they're in that position because they've been too good to me."

FremantleMedia North America, which produces "The Price Is Right," did not respond to a call seeking comment Thursday.

Barker taped his last episode — his 6,586th — of the popular CBS game show Wednesday, retiring after five decades on national television. The episode is scheduled to air twice June 15: once at its usual time and again that evening.

The silver-haired host ended his record tenure by blowing kisses and working in the same low-key, genial fashion that made him one of daytime TV's biggest stars. He closed the show with his usual, "Help control the pet population, have your pets spayed or neutered. Goodbye everybody."

Once the cameras stopped rolling, he told the studio audience: "I thank you, thank you, thank you for inviting me into your home for more than 50 years. I'm truly grateful, and I hope that all of you have enjoyed your visit to `The Price Is Right.'"

Reruns of Barker-hosted shows will play throughout the summer.

A new host has yet to be named. Among those reportedly in the running are Todd Newton of the E! network, Mark Steines of "Entertainment Tonight," George Hamilton and John O'Hurley.

He is being a good sport & offering his services if they can't get the new host ready to go by the start of production for season 36. Whats wrong with that? CBS & fremantle have been good to him.

I think the problem is, Freemantle is being a little too picky with their choice. It is obvious who TPIR fans want as the successor.

I think it only makes sense for Fremantle to select Todd Newton to succeed Bob Barker as host of The Price is Right. Anyone who has hosted TPIR Live at Bally's in Las Vegas, attended tapings of the show at CBS and has been taking notes on how to host the show while attending the show's tapings, deserves to be Bob Barker's successor. Mriggles did say in a recent post that Bob Barker likes both Todd Newton and Rich Fields, so I wouldn't be surprised if Todd takes the reigns as host and Rich is announcing for him. I still believe Todd and Rich will be TPIR's host/announcer combo in season 36. It makes sense to me as much as it will make sense to Bob.

I don't think they're being too picky at all. They need to find the perfect host to host the show, or else no one's going tune in. It invlolves a lot of tough decisions in order to make the pefect decision. But, I honestly don't think Bob's ever going to host again. This is probbly going to make Fremantle choose a host sooner than expected, since they wouldn't want Bob to have to go through this again.

Though, I would happily see him host it for another season , or even a few more months. Bob is all about the Price is Right. It will never be the same to watch again . . .

Im sure they will too, but the thing is for season 36 of the show to kick off on time in the middle of september they have to have the new host in place well in advance. Typically Price is right begins taping their new season in the first week in june, this year production WAS slated to begin on Season 36 on June 18th. That is obviouslly not going to happen now since there is no host & from what I understand the production staff still has many question marks on it. The good thing about this is that with a younger host the schedule pace can be picked up a bit & there is a better chance of getting the show off on time even if they get started in july. It is still possible but with every day without a new host the chances are getting worse that season 36 starts off on time.
