Woman Receives Death Threats After Criticizing Jordin Sparks' Weight

A woman who has been publicly criticizing “American Idol” winner Jordin Sparks over her weight has reportedly received death threats because of her remarks.

MeMe Roth, of the National Action Against Obesity group, says fans of the singer are “calling for my death” and sending her vicious hate e-mail ever since she appeared on a TV show and spoke out against Sparks’ weight.


Roth tells MSNBC.com’s The Scoop that she’s only looking out for Sparks’ long term health when she refers to the 17-year-old as “obese.”

"When I look at Jordin I see diabetes, I see heart disease, I see high cholesterol. That's what's so sad about this - she is not the vision of health - she is the vision of unhealth,” Roth said.

Sparks, whose father is former NFL star Phillipi Sparks, has said publicly that she embraces her “extra curves” and is against society’s obsession with being thin. Roth, however, believes those kinds of attitudes toward excess weight can lead to catastrophic health problems down the line.


“Her extra weight is a reflection of today's society and a culture where many of our children have compromised health due to unhealthful food choices and inactivity,” said Roth. “We have to stop with the 'baby fat,' 'curvy,' 'goddess' euphemisms and own this child’s health crisis."
