I love the Stephens' house! It was pretty modern for the time. The layout is practical and it makes sense, not like many other sitcom houses that you can tell are a series of sets that don't necessarily connect logically.
The living room wall is brick with indented spaces for shelves. The dining room has a mural on the wall by the kitchen door. The staircase has a right-angle turn and a landing which helps us see upstairs, and allows for scenes on the stairs. It has a functional den for Darrin to work on projects or relax (and it's across the hall from the kitchen and has its own bathroom). The kitchen has an indoor grill and that cool stove and oven with the glass door that lifts up. The bedroom sports the only double bed of that era allowing for some touching and/or realistic scenes between husband and wife. The beautifully-landscaped backyard and patio are easily accessible from a large sliding door and make the living room seem open and larger. And of course, the large windows all around the house which make it seem open and airy and more importantly, allow Mrs. Kravitz to peer in from any angle! These observations are from the black and white seasons. Of course in the later seasons there are more scenes upstairs in the bedrooms. I think the kitchen might change later, but I'm not sure. Can anyone fill me in on changes to the house? So far I only have season one and season two is on its way! |

Towards the beginning of Season 7, a fire destroyed the kitchen set. The cast was going to be filming in Salem, MA for several weeks so the crew had time to rebuild the set before shooting resumed in LA. In my opinion, the new kitchen set was loud and tacky, with fake stairs. It screams 1970s.
But I love the original layout of the house...especially the living room!! I've heard of Bewitched fans building their own houses modeled after Sam and Darrin's. It is indeed a charming house.

Yes it is, I love that house. They blew it up on an episode of Home Improvement, so it's not the original seen today.

I love the Stephens' house along with the Bradys and The Nelsons--talk about a mansion (in comparison to other sitcoms of the day).
